Chapter 226 Killing The Telepathic Zombie

Finished

Joanna glanced back at Caleb, Realizing he was too weak and had no combat powers to defend himself in the upcoming fight, she activated her abilities and threw him directly into her storage space to safely wait it out.

With Caleb secure, she turned sharply to Rachel. “Locate that telepathic zombie right now.”

Rachel closed her eyes, squeezing her temples as she extended her mental awareness, searching for the source of the pre-programmed tripwire. After a few agonizing seconds of silence, her eyes snapped open and she pointed directly south. “There. It’s in the industrial area of Westridge. Warehouses and car shops.”

Joanna watched as Rachel narrowed her eyes in fierce concentration, pouring her psychic strength into a counter-attack. “I am disrupting the mental control waves,” Racherreported, her voice straining under the effort. “It’s like-”

Before she could finish the sentence, the trap sprang entirely.

Zombies began pouring out from beneath the underpass and behind the rusted vehicles, completely flooding the frozen asphalt. The horde was a dangerous mixture of level-ones and level-twos, and worse, several of them flashed with the distinct energy of active superpowers.

“Everyone out!” Joanna ordered over the roar of the emerging horde. She grabbed Rachel by the arm. “Rachel, you’re with me. Let’s go hunt that mind controlling zombie.”

Leaving the rest of her team behind to clash with the charging horde, Joanna locked onto the southern horizon, triggered her spatial jumping, and teleported herself and Rachel past the tree line toward the

warehouses.

The bitter winter wind howled between the rusted corrugated metal buildings as Joanna and Rachel materialized in a shadow-filled alleyway. The industrial area of Westridge was an eerie maze of abandoned auto shops and cavernous warehouses, completely detached from the chaotic roaring of the horde back at the underpass.

“Which way?” Joanna whispered, her fingers tightening around the hilt of her sickle sword.

Rachel swept her gaze across the gray buildings, her eyes wide with sudden panic. “It knows we’re here. The disruption wave I sent completely enraged it. It’s moving inside that commercial garage to our left, and Joanna-it’s fast.”

Joanna gripped Rachel’s shoulder, locking onto the spatial coordinates.

Pop.

They tore through the fabric of space, blinking directly through the reinforced brick wall into the dim, chilly interior of a massive mechanic’s bay. Lifeless cars sat on hydraulic lifts, surrounded by layers of dust and debris under broken skylights.

At the far end of the garage, standing atop an overturned tool chest, was the level three telepathic zombie. Unlike the hulking level-three strength beast from before, this creature was terrifyingly lean, its limbs impossibly long and spider-like. Its skull was unnaturally distended and translucent, pulsing with a volatile, veins-of-light glow that exposed the twitching, hyper-evolved mass beneath.

The moment they shattered its sanctuary, the telepathic zombie let out a horrifying, high-pitched screech. A visible ripple of distorted reality blasted outward-a localized psychic shockwave meant to turn their brains to ash.

Rachel stepped forward, throwing her hands up as she projected a massive mental barrier. The shockwave slammed into her invisible shield, creating a loud, electric crackle that shattered every remaining window in the garage, raining glass onto the concrete

“I’m holding it down!” Rachel shouted, blood beginning to pour from her nose and ears from the crushing pressure of the psychic tug-of-war. “Joanna, kill it now! I can’t keep its mind pinned for long!”

Before Joanna could leap, the telepathic zombie snapped its head toward Rachel. A second, unseen psychic spike tore through Rachel’s shield. Rachel screamed in agony, collapsing to her knees as her mental barrier shattered completely.

Free from the constraint, the creature scrambled backward up the wall with unnatural, terrifying speed, disappearing into the dark rafters. It was heading for a broken skylight to escape over the rooftops. If it got away, it would lead the entire fifty-zombie horde straight to them, or worse, script a permanent ambush loop they could never break.

“No, you don’t!” Joanna hissed.

She triggered her explosive physical strength, shattering the concrete beneath her boots as she launched herself upward.

Pop.

She teleported directly into the rafters, but the creature anticipated her move. It whipped its long, skeletal arm around, claws catching Joanna across the shoulder and tearing through her jacket. The force of the impact nearly threw her off balance, her boots slipping on the narrow metal beam. The zombie scrambled to the lip of the roof, half its body already out in the cold air.

Joanna pushed past the sting of the scratch and focused entirely on the escaping monster.

Pop.

She vanished and reappeared directly in the open air above the skylight, blocking its path. Falling downward, she channeled every ounce of her enhanced muscle, swinging her sickle sword in a brutal, desperate arc. The curved blade sliced cleanly through the telepath’s neck just as it leaped forward to crush her.

The glowing light in its skull instantly extinguished. The severed head bounced off the roof tiles and fell back through the skylight, while the lean torso crashed heavily into a pile of discarded tires below.

Joanna dropped light on her feet onto the concrete floor of the garage, flicking the black blood off her blade in one smooth motion. Moving in absolute silence, she walked over to the severed head, drove her blade into the skull, and expertly extracted the glowing telepathic core. She pocketed the energy source without a word, her expression grim.

Turning on her heel, she walked over to Rachel, who was still slumped against the workbench, trembling and breathing heavily from the psychic strain. Joanna firmly grabbed Rachel by the arm, hoisting her up, and told her to rest.
