Chapter 234 The Great Escape

Space warped again, and Joanna materialized silently behind the older lookout on the second floor. With a swift, practiced chop to the carotid artery, she sent the man slumping forward over the windowsill, completely unconscious before he could make a sound.
Suddenly, a shadow lunges from the adjacent hallway-a young Blood Fang thug, hunting knife raised, his eyes wide with lethal intent as he charges.
The blade slashed through the air with terrifying, supernatural velocity. The man possessed a speed ability, his movements blurring as he lunged again and again, forcing Joanna onto the defensive. He caught her completely by surprise, the tip of his blade slicing a clean line through her jacket as he weaponized his acceleration.
But Joanna’s expression simply stops.
As the speedster blurred forward for a lethal throat slash, Joanna stopped trying to match his velocity. Instead, she anticipated his trajectory, drawing on her absolute detachment. The moment his foot hit the floorboards, space warped violently in a micro-jump right in front of him.
The thug ran full-force into her trap. Before his enhanced reflexes could adjust to the sudden displacement, Joanna caught his knife wrist, snapping it with a sickening crunch.
The man opens his mouth to scream, but she gives him no time. Pivoting inside his guard, she drives the heel of her palm upward, a single crushing blow beneath his jaw. The speedster’s body goes limp, sliding to the dusty floor without another twitch.
Two lookouts handled. No alerts triggered.
Joanna drank several deep gulps of hot spring water, instantly restoring more than half her energy.

She warped back inside the brick building, sending a psychic message to her crew: ‘Threats neutralized.”
Jake was waiting for her in the walkway, his face grim. “It looks bad, Boss. Levi’s group had a hundred soldiers. Only forty remain.”
They walked into the third-floor stronghold. The stagnant air was foul, thick with the suffocating stench of unwashed bodies, dried blood, and raw fear. Forty filthy, starving soldiers huddled on the frozen concrete, their hollow eyes tracking Joanna in exhaustion.
Without a word, Joanna stepped forward. She waved her hand, materializing several massive, five-gallon jugs of pristine spring water onto the floor.
“Drink up,” Joanna ordered firmly. “This will give you your energy back. Move fast, we leave in five minutes.”
Major Levi appeared to be about ten years older than Briggs, with fine streaks of grey dusting his temples. He took several gulps of water from Briggs, and then he locked his focus entirely onto Joanna, his sharp

“Thank you,” Levi said softly, his voice carrying absolute sincerity. We didn’t have much time left. I had almost given up hope of rescue. He took a deep drink from a canteen filled with the pristine fluid, letting out a heavy breath. “It seems every time we try to leave, we get cornered. We tried fighting our way out several times, but strange zombies appeared within minutes of us stepping outside.”
“You had several lookouts watching your every move,” Joanna explained calmly. “They didn’t want to engage you directly yet; they just wanted to wear you down and trap you. But we need to leave right now. There is a massive horde coming.”
The Major paused, his brow furrowing deeply as he looked around the room. He blinked in shock, noticing a sudden shift in his own body as a wave of intense energy surged through his veins. Across the floor, his men-who had all just drank the water-were already standing up, color returning to their gaunt faces as they breathed easier.
“What is happening?” Levi asked, frowning as he looked down at his canteen. “The water we just drank… what is in that?”
Joanna smirked. “It’s rejuvenation water. It should give your troops enough energy to make it to safer ground. Once we get there, we can rest and give them actual food.”
Levi cast a quick look at her team, a look of complete bewilderment washing over his hardened features. He was clearly wondering how this small crew could possibly be hiding enough food to feed forty starving soldiers in the middle of a warzone.
But seeing the undeniable strength returning to his troops, he didn’t waste time questioning the miracle. He gave Joanna a firm nod and immediately turned to face his men, his voice snapping back into a commanding bark as he started issuing rapid evacuation orders.
The forty soldiers filed out of the old brick building with practiced precision, stepping directly into the heavily falling snow.
Joanna scanned their formation instantly. Major Levi had positioned his few remaining awakened soldiers on the outer perimeter of the group, their hands resting on their weapons to protect the regular troops.
“Form a perimeter around them,” Joanna ordered her crew sharply.
Briggs, Jake, Jolie, Julian, RJ, and Kailee immediately fanned out, creating a secondary, protective ring to completely encircle the soldiers.
The downtown streets were eerily empty, but the environment was far from dead. As they marched, Joanna’s sharp eyes caught shifting shadows behind cracked panes and heavy blankets. Several windows in the high-rise buildings were moving, showing terrified survivors peeking out from the darkness.
