Chapter 245 The Aberrant Zombies

Finished

With a snap of folded space, Joanna materialized inside the derelict subway station where her team had first entered holding her flashlight. The air here was damp and freezing

Where are you guys? Joanna asked in the mental chat, her voice echoing silently across thic bond.-

We took the left tunnel, but there is a wrecked train that went off the tracks, Jolie’s voice chimed in quickly. We are doubling back now.

Understanding their position, Joanna teleported again, snapping through the darkness to meet her team at the underground fork.

It was pitch black. Cold drops of water dripped from the cracked concrete ceiling, dampening the tracks below. The beams of her team’s flashlights cut through the gloom, illuminating smeared blood coating the walls and ground. A few dead zombies lay scattered across the tracks, their charred, smoking remains proof that Briggs had already torched them.

Soon, the dancing beams of flashlights bounced off the stained walls as her team emerged from the gloom. They quickly reunited at the fork, the tension in the damp air thick enough to cut.

Rachel looked deeply uneasy, her eyes darting back toward the left tunnel. She opened a channel through the mind link to chat. Caleb, any read on the train crash? It looks like it was deliberate.

I don’t know, Caleb replied, his voice echoing in their minds from inside the safety of Joanna’s pocket space. I was able to pick up threads about danger, but the connection got severed before I could sort through everything.

That’s entirely useless, Caleb! Julian snapped back through the link, his mental tone sharp with frustration. We need answers, not vague warnings about danger we can already smell!

Julian was obviously annoyed, his irritation flaring because he couldn’t safely use his electricity powers in this wet, damp subway station. The dripping water and puddles on the ground turned the entire area into a massive hazard for him and the team.

Back off, Julian, Rachel snapped through the mind link, sensing his rising frustration. Blaming Caleb isn’t going to dry this place out.

Joanna stood quietly between them, the cold detachment from the surface still clinging to her. She looked down the dark, unmapped right tunnel, realizing that whatever had deliberately derailed that train might still be waiting for them in the pitch black.

“Something might have blocked that tunnel on purpose,” Joanna spoke up. “I smell a setup.”

Everyone tensed instantly. Flashlight beams wavered as the team gripped their weapons, eyes darting to the pitch-black shadows.

Julian’s jaw tightened, suppressing his static energy. Rachel backed toward Briggs. The heavy dripping of water from the ceiling suddenly felt like a countdown. Whatever had derailed that train to herd them here was likely already watching.

“Take a five-minute break and drink water,” Joanna ordered. “It will help recover your energy levels.”

Chapter 245-The Aberrant Zombie’s

Finished

The forty men, along with Major Levi, sank down against the damp wall. The tunnel ceiling loomed high above, and the thick darkness swallowed their vision barely fifteen feet ahead.

Joanna pulled portable floodlights from her pocket dimension and flipped them on. The harsh glare illuminated the dripping stone, but it did nothing to ease the tension. Everyone sat in anxious silence, gripped by a bad feeling.

The floodlights flickered as a drop of water hit the hot lens. Rachel’s eyes suddenly snapped wide, her face turning pale.

They’re coming, her voice echoed in the mental link, taut with fear. Right in front of us.

The team fell completely silent. In the dead quiet, pale, distorted figures slowly began to creep out of the pitch darkness. These were aberrant super zombies-larger, completely silent, and chillingly intelligent. Instead of rushing forward, they moved with a coordinated, predatory slowness, some clinging effortlessly to the high, wet ceiling like insects.

Rachel tried to cast her mental telepathy to seize control of their minds, but she recoiled, gasping. I can’t hold them. I can only slow them down-they are too powerful for mind control.

“Julian, get back!” Joanna ordered, shoving the electric-wielder toward the rear. “You’re a hazard in this water. Move!”

The team unleashed hell. Briggs stepped forward, his hands erupting into roaring torrents of fire that lit up the grotesque faces. Beside him, Jolie slammed her palms against the ground, forcing thick, armored plant vines to burst from the concrete cracks, wrapping around the descending monsters to pin them in place.

Kailee channeled her wind power, creating sharp, localized gales that blasted two of the creatures off the walls. The moment they hit the ground, Jake flexed his metal power, tearing up the iron subway rails with a sickening screech, twisting the steel beams like ribbons to impale the thrashing beasts.

Despite the onslaught, more shadows slowly emerged from the dark just beyond the floodlights, completely unfazed by the deaths of their pack.

An aberrant super zombie lunged from the darkness with blinding speed. Joanna raised her sickle sword, but the creature’s clawed hand struck her with immense, unnatural force.

The blow threw her back violently across the station. She slammed into the concrete wall with a concussive crash, shattering the stone and sending a cloud of dust and debris into the air.

As she hit the ground, the creatures stopped their slow advance. They threw their heads back and let out a coordinated, piercing screech that echoed deafeningly through the tall tunnel. It wasn’t a mindless roar; they were communicating, shifting their formations in perfect unison based on the signal.

The intelligent creatures adjusted their tactics instantly, shifting their lines to herd Rachel away from the core of the team. They cut off her retreat, isolating her in the shadows just beyond the perimeter of the floodlights.

Realizing she was trapped, Rachel panicked, her telepathic focus breaking. A massive, pale aberrant lunged at her from the ceiling, its jaws snapping open inches from her throat.
