Everyone finished eating and was cleaning up when RJ suddenly stood up, her eyes locking onto the empty stretch of road behind them. A deep frown carved into her face.

Brandon, who had been surprisingly well-behaved so far with Levi and his group whipped his head around too. He bolted up from his spot and ran over to RJ, staring intently in the same direction. The relaxed atmosphere evaporated instantly; both of them went completely rigid with tension.

Joanna dropped her canteen, her hand instinctively drifting toward her sickle sword. “What is it?”

Brandon looked back at her, his usual arrogance completely replaced by genuine worry. “There are multiple cars racing this way. They are coming in with killing intent, and they are looking for you.”

RJ nodded grimly, her fingers twitching near her weapons. “Heavy firepower, too. We only have about two

minutes.”

Sure enough, a low, collective rumble began to vibrate through the frozen ground. Seconds later, the unmistakable roar of heavily modified, high-speed engines echoed down the highway, fast approaching their position.

With only two minutes to spare, Joanna didn’t hesitate. She threw her hands out, her spatial energy sweeping over their entire line of transport. In a seamless blur, she snapped Julian’s three all-terrain vehicles, the cargo vans, and the SUVs into her pocket dimension, clearing the highway of any easy targets.

“Defensive positions, now!” Jake roared, his voice cutting through the nervous energy.

The earth-type soldiers immediately slammed their palms into the frozen asphalt. The existing dirt walls shot upward, thick layers of earth and stone forming a massive, reinforced defensive blockade across the highway. Levi’s men scrambled behind the barrier, unholstering their weapons and locking their eyes onto the bend in the road.

Briggs stepped up right beside Joanna, his dark eyes flashing with a cold, predatory light. “Looks like someone didn’t get the memo about Tech Valley.”

“Let them come,” Joanna muttered, tucking Caleb into her space to keep him safe.

Right on cue, the roar of the incoming engines deafened the air. Three heavily armored combat vehicles tore around the frozen curve, skidding slightly on the ice. They caught sight of the sudden dirt fortification and began to decelerate, but not before the mounted heavy machine guns on their roofs spun to life, aiming directly at the blockade.

Brandon leaned in close, his voice dropping to a tense, urgent whisper. “That’s Carl. He’s one of the main leaders of the Blood Fang, and he has a lethal water ability. Be careful. He knows how to literally suck the water right out of a person’s body. Within minutes, you’re dead.”

Before Joanna could even process the threat, a tall man in his forties stepped out of the passenger side of the lead truck. He was exceptionally skinny, mean-looking, and had a lit cigarette dangling from his lips. He took one slow drag, threw the bud down onto the frozen asphalt, and crushed it beneath his boot.

Lifting a hand, he pointed a sharp finger directly toward the dirt barricade. “Which one of you pieces of crap is the demoness?”

Beside him, one of his surviving scouts quickly stepped forward, pointing a trembling finger through the gap in the wall and whispering frantically into his ear.

‘s head snapped up. He locked eyes directly with Joanna, and she saw pure, unadulterated fury and hatred burning in his gaze.

Carl stepped past his truck’s bumper, the air around him visibly shimmering with a sudden, oppressive humidity that defied the freezing winter cold.
