Brandon stepped into the fray, immediately using his mental power to target the horde’s cohesion. Waves of psychic energy rolled out from him, slowly breaking the invisible mind control that held the zombies in perfect sync. Deprived of their unified guidance, the infected stumbled, their rigid military formations dissolving back into mindless chaos.
Simultaneously, Fletcher surged forward, using his super strength to tear through the front lines. He moved like a juggernaut, ripping zombies apart with his bare hands, throwing severed torsos aside as if they weighed nothing. The rest of his men followed his lead, launching a heavy assault that smashed into the left flank of the horde. Within another half hour, the relentless combined attack finally brought the nightmare to an end, and hundreds of zombies lay dead across the stained asphalt.
The moment the last infected fell, Brandon didn’t care about the blood or the grime covering the area. He sprinted straight toward Joanna, grabbing her and hugging her tightly even though she was filthy. His eyes were frantic and manic, wide with a desperate, wild relief.
The intense grip was overwhelming, and she had to physically push him off of her to get him to listen to reason. “I’m fine, Brandon,” she said, her voice firm as she stepped back.
He didn’t seem completely anchored by her words. Looking unhinged and frantic, he pulled a clean napkin out of his pocket and reached up, gently wiping the dirt and sweat from her face. As strange and erratic as he looked right now, Joanna let him do it, recognizing the raw shock in his eyes.
As Brandon finished, the tense silence around them broke. Julian, Jolie, and Fletcher walked over to join her, while Allen and Jake remained nearby, keeping their weapons ready and their eyes locked on the
newcomers.
Fletcher spoke up, breaking the brief silence. “One of our scouting teams saw you and raced back to tell me. We came as fast as we could.”
Joanna nodded, acknowledging the timely rescue. “Thank you, Fletcher.”
He gave a solemn nod, his expression heavy. “You’re lucky we were nearby, Little Dove.”
Brandon spoke next, his voice still trembling with that manic energy. “I thought I lost you.”
Julian immediately let out a small, warning arc of electricity that crackled sharply through the air. He stepped forward and wrapped his arm protectively around Joanna, glaring at Brandon. “You should know, kid, that the Demoness isn’t yours to lose.”
Joanna smiled softly at Julian’s fierce reply, though she was still slightly winded from the grueling fight. She looked back at the others, her expression turning dead serious. “There is a zombie king somewhere here. I want his head on a platter.”
Jolie agreed instantly, a shiver running down her spine. “That kind of control is terrifying. Will really wasn’t lying about the number of zombies.”
Fletcher frowned, his interest piqued. “What do you mean?”
Jake explained from a few feet away, leaning on his weapon. “One of our men said there was a strange number of zombies that somehow knew to hit the team when they came here to scavenge. Several times they had to retreat just to get away.”

Joanna looked at Brandon, her gaze intense. “Can you find him using your telepathy?”
Brandon looked away, adjusting his focus as he strained his mental senses. “Yeah, but I can’t pinpoint it. Good enough to get a general idea though.”
Joanna took a deep breath, turning her attention to the battlefield. She swept her hand over the massive sea of dead bodies. In an instant, hundreds of level one and level two cores vanished from the corpses, sucked directly into her storage space in a dizzying flash.
Inside her warehouse, she quickly sorted through the haul, pushing a third of the collected cores into a heavy sack. With a thought, she brought the sack out into the physical world and held it out. “Here, Fletcher, For your help.”
Fletcher stared at the bag, slowly realizing that Joanna had just harvested and processed an entire battlefield’s worth of cores in the blink of an eye. He looked at her with pure, unadulterated envy. “Little Dove, you are incredible.”
Joanna smiled tightly, the adrenaline still pumping through her veins despite the throbbing ache in her bitten arm. “Give me ten minutes,” she said, mapping out the immediate plan. “Then Brandon, take us there. Julian, you’re with me. Jolie-message the rest of the team and tell them we need help.”
Joanna and Julian moved deeper into the steel mill’s warehouse, the heavy doors groaning shut behind them. In the sudden quiet, Joanna’s shoulders slumped. A limp betrayed her exhaustion.
She leaned against crates, breath catching as she pulled a stone basin from her storage space. Steam rose from the hot spring water inside.
Julian’s smirk vanished. He knelt, took her wounded arm-his fingers warm on her cold skin. At the sight of the jagged bite, his jaw clenched. A spark snapped at his wrist as he realized what happened to her.
“You always throw yourself into the fire, my Demoness,” he murmured, his voice thick with a mix of frustration and profound tenderness.
“I had to save Allen,” she whispered, her voice cracking slightly as the adrenaline truly began to fade.
Julian dipped a clean cloth into the steaming spring water. “I know,” he said softly, looking up to meet her gaze. “That’s exactly why we follow you.”
He poured the water over the wound. Joanna’s grip tightened on his shoulder, a sharp breath escaping her as the heat drove into the bite. The purple veins threading her skin darkened, then slowly retreated. Julian pressed the cloth in gently, and the tissue began to close.
Relief washed over Joanna, her head dropping forward until her forehead rested gently against Julian’s. He closed his eyes, wrapping his free arm securely around her waist, just holding her for a quiet moment in the dark warehouse while the steam swirled around them.
