Briggs didn’t even bother to slow down, slamming the heavy tires of the Beast straight into a giant, rotting pile of the undead before finally grinding to a halt. The impact sent a shower of decomposed bodies flying a dozen feet through the air, scattering them across the gravel lot like broken mannequins.
Julian didn’t miss a beat, lowering his weapon and staring at the driver’s side window with an exasperated look. “Fantastic work, Briggs,” he shouted over the idling roar of the engine. “Really glad to see you’re still treating a multi-ton tactical vehicle like a bumper car at a cursed carnival. Remind me never to let you valet anything I own.”
The armored doors of the Beast flew open, and RJ hopped out first, rifle raised as he scanned the perimeter Right behind him came Kailee and Raven, with Titan-their fierce, stumpy-legged corgi-bounding down after them, his tiny ears pinned back as he let out a surprisingly deep, protective bark into the bloody night
air.
Jake frowned, his gaze shifting from the pile of flying zombie parts to the passenger side of the vehicle. “Briggs, why the hell did you bring my eleven-year-old sister here?”
Briggs just shrugged unbothered, cutting the engine. “I wasn’t going to, but Caleb said she should go with Titan.”
Jake immediately turned away, furiously texting Caleb a string of angry questions, while Joanna took advantage of the moment to bring the newly arrived crew up to date. She quickly explained the horde, the potential live ambush, and the threat of the Billings siblings. Turning directly to RJ, her expression hardened. “We need help tracking the mind controller.”
RJ shot a sharp, condescending look at Brandon. “Useless!” she scoffed.
Brandon’s mouth thinned into a tight, angry line. His knuckles turned white as he clenched his fists, but he held his tongue, knowing damn well he was weaker than RJ and couldn’t argue right now.
Jake tapped on Joanna’s shoulder. “Caleb said there are a bunch of level two mutated dogs over there to the right, and they are incredibly dangerous.”
Joanna gave a firm nod, absorbing the threat just as RJ stepped forward, her eyes locked on the distant skyscraper. “I sense three main problems inside that building,” RJ announced, her voice tight. “One female and two males. One of the males is the telepath controlling the horde, but he only listens to the other two.”
Fletcher’s face darkened instantly as the pieces clicked. “It sounds like Bianca, Michael, and Rafe Billings,” he spoke up, spitting the names out like venom. “I destroyed their stronghold a few days ago, but they managed to escape.”
Joanna turned to her trackers, her leadership commanding the room. “RJ, Brandon-I need intel. How
many people are we dealing with, and what exactly is going on inside?”
Brandon looked past RJ, focusing on his cousin. “Take me a few blocks to the right of that building. I can feel a perimeter-I sense they desperately want to keep us out of there.”
RJ chimed in, her tone dropping all sarcasm for a moment. “Boss, the main building has about twenty five people inside. But here’s the catch: they are all ability users. Every single one of them. Also, they know you are coming for them.”

Joanna turned to Fletcher, her expression hardening with strategic focus. “You guys should go and take whatever they are hiding. My team and I will deal with the Billings family. As for the other users in there… I
Heave that to you, since you might absorb some of them into your group. Those other clowns who sent the horde die today though.”
Fletcher nodded, a small, approving smile playing on his lips. “Now you sound like me, little doye.” He took his team off to check out the other site.
The skyscraper loomed over the ruined city like a jagged glass shard, catching the final, bloody rays of sunset. Somewhere behind those reflective windows, twenty-five hostile ability users stood silent guard, bound together by an unsettling, cult-like coordination. They all served the Billings siblings-arrogant, entitled heirs of the old world who treated the apocalypse like a hostile corporate takeover/Rumor had it they had uncovered something deep within the city, a secret they were willing to drown the streets in blood to protect. But Joanna hadn’t come to negotiate.
