They bypassed the elevator shafts, moving up the central stairwell in lethal silence. The atmosphere grew heavier with every flight, the shadows stretching into bizarre, distorted shapes along the concrete walls. Joanna led the charge, her strength-type superpower making the grueling ascent effortless, though an icy sensation pricked at the edge of her mind. Behind her came Julian, his fingers twitching as faint, blue arcs of electricity danced across his knuckles, his executioner instincts locked and loaded.
By the time they reached the twenty-fourth floor, the mystery of the quiet took a sickening turn. The air pressure dropped violently. A suffocating, invisible weight clamped down on Joanna’s mind, tasting of cold static and old rot. It wasn’t just a guard post-the entire floor was a psychic trap designed to turn their own minds against them.
Rafe. The enemy telepath was trying to force his way behind their eyes, whispering maddening echoes into their thoughts.
Before the psychic pressure could crush them into compliance, RJ stepped to the front of the line. Her eyes flashed with an intense, crystalline light as she threw up a massive mental shield. The unseen psychic waves clashed in the corridor, causing the very air to ripple and warp with visible, distorted static.
“I’ve got him blocked!” RJ hissed through gritted teeth, blood beginning to trickle from her left nostril as she locked horns with Rafe’s mind in a silent, brutal duel. “He’s trying to command the others to tear themselves apart just to stop us! He knows we’re here, but he can’t get inside your heads. Move now!”
“Jake, tear the barrier down!” Joanna commanded, her voice cutting through the mental noise.
Jake stepped forward, his eyes flashing brilliant silver. He slammed both hands against the reinforced, blast- proof steel fire door. Under his absolute metal manipulation, the deadbolts and heavy steel hinges shrieked in agony, liquefying into a swirling vortex of molten metal before reshaping into a massive, jagged battering ram. With a deafening, metallic roar, the door flew inward, shattering the opulent marble entryway of the penthouse suite.
Instantly, the ambush triggered. A faction of the twenty-five ability users lunged from the shadows of the foyer, unleashing a barrage of kinetic blasts and elemental fire. Kailee moved first, thrusting both palms forward. A cataclysmic air pulse erupted from her hands, tearing through the grand entrance, shattering the crystal chandeliers into a million lethal shards, and sending a half-dozen of the guarding ability-users crashing violently through the drywall.
Briggs, the cold military commander, stepped calmly over the debris. He raised a single hand, his eyes reflecting a terrifying inner light, and a towering wall of roaring, white-hot fire erupted down the left corridor. It instantly cut off the remaining reinforcements, trapping them in a hellish blaze of their own making and sealing the strike team’s flank.
With the guards occupied, Joanna walked into the grand, open-concept living room. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of the burning city below, painting the room in shades of blood and ash. Standing by a grand piano were the Billings siblings, looking like dark royalty amidst the chaos.
Rafe stood clutching his head, screaming in frustration as RJ aggressively and systematically dismantled his telepathic hold on the building, fracturing his mind layer by layer. Next to him was Michael, a towering brute boasting the same strength-type power as Joanna, his muscles bulging so violently they ripped the seams of his tailored designer suit. In front of them stood Bianca, her eyes glowing a sinister, milky white as massive, pressurized spheres of water levitated around her, swirling with enough velocity to cut through

Qure late,” Bianca mocked, a desperate, arrogant edge to her voice as the glass around them began to vibrate from the sheer power in the room. “Do you honestly think a bunch of street rats can take what we’ve
built?”
Joanna didn’t answer. A cold, dark rage consumed her. These pampered elites had weaponized a sea of corpses against her team, nearly getting them killed and leaving her carrying a ticking death sentence in her veins. Death was too easy for them. They needed to feel the absolute terror they had inflicted on her people.
Before Bianca could launch her lethal water spheres, the space around her warped. Joanna vanished.
Using her storage space teleportation, Joanna slipped completely out of reality, reappearing a fraction of a second later directly in front of Michael. She grabbed him by the throat, her strength-type power tightening like a hydraulic press. Michael gasped, his own strength failing against her absolute dominance. With a brutal twist, Joanna slammed him face-first into the marble floor, shattering his nose and teeth. Before he could crawl away, she stomped heavily on his knee, the sickening crack of bone echoing through the penthouse as he shrieked in agony, entirely crippled.
“Michael!” Bianca shrieked. She whipped her hands forward, sending a torrent of razor-sharp, high- pressure water slicing toward Joanna’s neck.
But Julian was already moving, anticipating the strike. He intercepted the stream, his eyes glowing with blinding blue light as he unleashed a massive, localized bolt of lightning directly into the oncoming torrent. The electricity surged instantly up the water current, illuminating the entire penthouse in a flash of blinding arc-light, instantly shocking Bianca into a convulsing heap on the floor.
