next morning, Joanna left Jolie and Briggs behind to start organizing the base. With so many shipping containers to sort through and secure, the work was massive but manageable under their direction.

Instead of making the drive, Joanna decided to use her abilities to save time and energy. She had Kailee, RJ, Julian, and Jake enter into her storage space, safely concealing them away. Once everyone was secured inside, Joanna focused on the coordinates and teleported directly to Julian’s place.

When Joanna used her storage space ability to teleport the group directly onto the property they materialized near the front porch. The door hung off its hinges, and the snow was heavily trampled with chaotic boot prints.

Julian, usually a cold and calculating CEO, saw the state of his home and lost his composure. Crackles of electricity flickered across his fingers as he moved to rush through the shattered entryway, desperate to protect his stockpile of firearms, food, and supplies.

Before he could take a step, RJ used her telepathic power to intercept his mind, forcing him to a sudden halt. Stop, her voice echoed sharply in his head. I sense betrayal inside. There is a mental signature in there, and whoever it is, they are incredibly powerful.

Hearing the warning, Jake immediately channeled his metal manipulation, his arms taking on a dangerous metallic sheen, while Kailee readyed an air pulse, the wind swirling fiercely around her palms. They took up defensive positions right behind Joanna, their eyes locked on the dark doorway, ready for an imminent fight.

Without warning, the mind flayer struck. Kailee’s eyes rolled back, turning a vacant, milky white as her air manipulation flared violently. A massive, concussive air pulse erupted from her palms, tearing toward the group. Acting on pure instinct, Joanna instantly activated her storage space, pulling everyone-including the attacking Kailee-into the safety of the void.

Once inside, Kailee collapsed onto the ground, completely unconscious. The threat was neutralized for the moment, but the sheer terrifying speed of the superpower left them shaken. It wasn’t just mental suggestion; it was an absolute, instant hostile takeover of a person’s body and abilities.

Worried about her condition, they carefully carried Kailee to the hot spring within the space, hoping the warm, ambient energy would help her recover.

Joanna turned to her group, her voice sharp with urgency. “What is happening out there?”

RJ closed her eyes, rubbing her temples as she processed the residual psychic feedback. “Before the attack, I managed to map the house. I remember sensing ten people total. Three or four of them are ability users. But the mind flayer just realized what he stumbled onto. He knows he found a survival gold mine here with Julian’s supplies, and now he wants us too.”

Joanna sat down on the edge of the stone spring with the rest of the group, her eyes locked on Kailee’s still form.

Jake looked between them, his metallic arms dimming. “How can we defeat this thing?”

Julian, his expression twisted in anger, glanced coldly at Kailee. “Maybe it isn’t worth it. We should leave.”

Joanna reached out and firmly grabbed his arm, forcing him to look at her. “No. I know what to do. I can

teleport directly into the basement and knock the flayer out before he realizes I’m there. The moment he’s down, I’ll bring you all out of the space to fight the remaining survivors.”

Rodded slowly, though her expression remained tense. “That could work if you’re quick. But it’s incredibly risky. If you’re a fraction of a second too slow, you could end up under the controller’s puppet control just like Kailee.”

Jake turned to RJ. “Could you control the flayer? Or at least lock him down?”

RJ shrugged, a look of frustration crossing her face. “I don’t know what kind of mental shield/he has, but is pretty thick. When I tried to grip his mind out there, the shield made my psychic grip slide right off. I couldn’t get a foothold.”

Joanna shook her head, standing up and checking her gear. “Don’t sweat it,” she said, a determined glint in her eye. “Just watch me.”

Through the visual projection window of the storage space, RJ’s eyes locked onto a figure near the back of the room, but her expression suddenly shifted into deep confusion. At first glance, the mind flayer looked just like a young boy, but what seemed strange about him was how remarkably fragile he looked. His sligh frame and delicate features seemed completely at odds with the terrifying, suffocating psychic power he wielded.

RJ pointed directly at the projection. “That’s him. That is the Flayer.”

Joanna studied the child’s eerie, fragile movements calmly. “Let’s wait until he is alone,” she spoke, her tone steady. “Then I can swoop in.”

Over the next few hours, the team watched the screen as several of the survivors worked together to rebuild the ruined front door, dragging heavy materials to reinforce the shattered entryway.
