Chapter 282 The Mind Flayer And Betrayal
Finished
Jonna focused-entirely on the image of the basement flooring she had seen through the window. With a silent activation of her ability, she vanished from the storage space and materialized instantly in the cool, dimly lit basement, hiding behind a row of heavy metal shelving.
The fragile-looking boy and his armed guard stepped off the bottom stair. The air down here smelled of gun oil and cold concrete. The guard, still holding his shotgun, was muttering something about the stew they had just eaten, totally oblivious to her presence.
“Check the crates on the left,” the boy said. His voice was quiet, high-pitched, and completely devoid offany childish warmth.
Joanna didn’t hesitate. Moving with absolute silence and speed, she slipped out from behind the shelving. She bypassed the guard entirely, aiming straight for the source of the mental threat. Before the child could even turn around, Joanna brought the heavy butt of her weapon down precisely against the back of his head.
The boy dropped instantly, crumpling onto the concrete floor without a sound.
The moment the child lost consciousness, the psychic connection snapped. At that exact second, the sound of multiple heavy thuds echoed from upstairs. The people under the flayer’s absolute control didn’t just wake up their minds suffered a massive, instantaneous shock from the severed link, causing them to collapse onto the floor, completely unconscious.
“What the–” the guard gasped, his eyes widening in pure shock as he started to swing the shotgun toward her. Unlike the others, he hadn’t been a puppet, but he was completely caught off guard.
With a flick of her wrist, Joanna opened her storage space and pulled Julian, Jake, and RJ out into the basement.
Julian materialized with a roar of anger, his hands completely alive with blinding arcs of electricity. Before the guard could pull the trigger, Julian thrust his palms forward, sending a massive shockwave of lightning straight into the man’s chest. The guard screamed as the current ripped through him, blasting him backward into a stack of wooden crates, where he slumped over, unconscious and smoking.
Jake immediately stepped forward, his arms shimmering with a thick coat of manipulated metal as he guarded the stairs. “We’ve got the noise covered down here. Let’s see what’s happening above.”
RJ knelt by the boy, fingers pressed to his temple. “Shield’s down. He’s out.” Her senses expanded upward through the floor. “The puppets upstairs are down too-link severed. Only the free ability users are left, and they’re panicking.”
Heavy footsteps pounded down the stairs as the survivors charged into the basement.
A speedster blurred from the gloom. RJ’s telepathic strike slowed him to a crawl. Jake wrapped steel bands around him, pinning him to the wall.
An earth user summoned a stone barrier. Joanna shattered it with one punch and knocked him out cold.
The last one flooded the corridor with water. Julian sent a torrent of lightning through it, electrocuting the user where he stood.

While Jake secured the remaining ability users, Joanna knelt beside the unconscious mind flayer to tie his hands. As she rolled the child over, the oversized jacket shifted, revealing a delicate necklace and a distinctly
minine facial structure beneath the dirt and messy hair.
“Whoa,” Jake muttered, leaning closer. “The boy is a girl.”
Julian stepped up to look down at the fragile figure, but the moment his eyes locked onto her face, the blood completely drained from his expression. He blanched, stepping back a pace as his cold composure shattered entirely.
“Julian?” Joanna asked, looking up from the ropes. “What is it?”
“She… she isn’t a boy,” Julian stammered, his voice tight with disbelief and rising anger. “She is my secretary,
Fiona.”
“Your secretary?” Jake asked, his metallic arms returning to normal as he stared at the unconscious girl. “She looks like a teenager.”
“She’s twenty-four,” Julian muttered, rubbing his temples in sheer disbelief. “She always wore heavy makeup and heels at the office, and she’s incredibly petite. With that oversized coat and dirt on her face, I didn’t recognize her at all.”
His eyes hardened as he stared at the shattered basement door, a chilling realization washing over his face. “Fiona must have stolen the information to this hideout. I kept the coordinates encrypted on my private server. But why? Why did she target this specific place before the world even fell apart?”
“Maybe she foresaw the collapse, or maybe she just wanted a golden parachute,” RJ suggested, keeping a close eye on Fiona’s dormant mental signature. “A mind flayer capability is strange and corrupting. With a power like that, it’s easy to see how she lost her mind and took over this group once she arrived.”
Joanna finished tying Fiona’s wrists with heavy-duty zip ties, pulling her to a sitting position against a wooden support pillar. She stared down at the fragile-looking girl, a deep, unsettling wariness settling in her
chest.
“RJ, be honest with me,” Joanna said, her voice dropping to a tense whisper. “Once she wakes up, can she take over our minds? Could she force us to turn on each other right here in the basement?”
RJ looked down at Fiona, her expression grim. “Her mental shield is thick, and her grip is instant. If she catches us off guard for even a fraction of a second, she could seize control before we can even blink. Keeping her alive is a massive liability, Joanna.”
“Then we kill her,” Jake said bluntly, crossing his heavy arms. “A mind flayer is too dangerous. We take her out now before she wakes up and turns us into puppets.”
“No,” Julian said instantly, stepping between Jake and the unconscious girl.
An argument immediately flared between the two men. “Are you crazy, Julian or does she mean something more to you?” Jake snapped, his skin shimmering with a metallic sheen. “She hijacked your life, stole your sanctuary, and she can wipe our minds!”
