Chapter 285 The Massive Mutated Core

Jonna launched herself forward and drove her fist into the creature’s exposed, pulsing chest. The impact cracked like a thunderclap, blasting a spray of glowing violet fluid into the snow. The monster roared, its parasitic tendrils whipping the air as it reeled back.
“The control over the people is weakening!” RJ shouted from the porch, gripping her temples. The link is fraying!”
The team shifted immediately. Julian dialed back his arcs to milder currents that seized muscles and dropped people into the snow without burning them. Jake reshaped nearby metal into blunt barriers and smooth rings, pinning citizens against walls and fences by their clothes and limbs. Maybe they could be saved.
Meanwhile, Joanna had successfully turned the bear’s full, furious attention onto herself.
The colossal monster roared, a sound that vibrated straight through Joanna’s boots. It lunged forward with terrifying speed for its size, swinging a massive, clawed paw that could have easily flattened a tank. Joanna didn’t dodge. Instead, she braced her feet into the snow, crossed her arms, and absorbed the blow directly.
The impact sounded like a car crash. The sheer force plowed Joanna backward, her boots carving deep trenches into the frozen dirt, but her arms remained unbroken. She stood firm, shaking off the vibration with a fierce glare.
The mutated bear paused, its hollow, cracked skull tilting downward. It let out a low, confused huff, completely surprised at how a single human could absorb a direct strike without shattering into pieces. Angered by her resilience, the monster reared up on its hind legs, towering over her like a monolith, and brought its full weight crashing down in a brutal stamp.
CRUNCH.
The sheer mass of the colossal grizzly stomped right over Joanna, burying her beneath a mountain of heavy fur, muscle, and crushed earth. For a split second, the battlefield went dead silent.
But before the bear could grind its weight to finish the job, Joanna activated her ability. In a flash of light, she teleported right out of its range, materializing twenty feet away on top of a stone retaining wall. She stumbled slightly, coughing up a bit of dust, her tactical vest scuffed and her muscles aching from the pressure, but her super strength had kept her core completely intact.
The bear slammed its paws into the empty crater where she had just been, spinning around wildly. Its crown of parasitic tendrils whipped the air in a panicked frenzy, completely bewildered by how its prize had vanished from right under its foot.
Joanna wiped a drop of blood from her lip, her eyes locking back onto the pulsing violet glow of the
creature’s chest. “My turn,” she muttered quietly.
Joanna unleashed a series of combat maneuvers that her team would talk about for years. Moving with terrifying grace, she synchronized her teleportation with the absolute limits of her super strength. She vanished silently into thin air, materializing to plunge a heavy punch into the bear’s ribcage, then vanished before the creature could even register the pain. An instant later, she appeared on its blind side, delivering another bone-shattering blow. It was the stuff of legends-a masterclass in tactical evasion and raw force.
The colossal bear, thoroughly disoriented and battered from all directions, finally lost its footing. It

hieving the threat neutralized, Joanna turned around toward her team, letting her guard down for a split second. But the monster wasn’t finished. From the ground, the bear silently launched its massive paw into the air, claws extended to slice her open from behind.
Sensing the shift in wind or pure battle instinct, Joanna spun on her heel. In a fluid, lethal motion, she whipped out her sickle sword. She brought the curved blade down with terrifying force directly onto the animal’s cracked skull. The steel split the bone instantly, killing the creature on the spot. The bear shuddered once and went entirely still.
All around the yard, the unbreathing townspeople froze. They didn’t collapse like Fiona’s puppets, and they didn’t advance; they simply stood perfectly still, their empty eyes staring out into nothingness. It was incredibly strange, a lingering stasis that left the air heavy.
The team rushed to Joanna’s side, their boots crunching in the blood-stained snow. Stepping up to the colossal carcass, Joanna reached into the fatal wound and pulled out a giant animal core. It was deep purple and the size of a baseball-by far the largest core she had ever laid eyes on. It rested heavily in her palm, visibly pulsing with a dark violet mist that curled around her fingers like smoke.
“Look at that thing,” Jake breathed, his metallic arms slowly returning to flesh. “The energy coming off it is insane.”
