Chapter 286 Reunited With Greg The Lawyer

Jonna threw her team back into her storage space to maximize her speed. She pulled out a small container of her special revitalizing water, drinking it down in one quick gulp. The cool liquid surged through her system, instantly soothing her aching muscles and wiping away the fatigue from the bear’s punishing blows.
Refreshed, she focused on the high vantage point above the town and teleported up the cliff face.
She materialized at the top, where a large water tower sat in the afternoon light covered in snow. The wind howled softly through the steel beams. Joanna scanned the area, her heart tightening. Was Greg still alive? There was no immediate sign of movement around the base of the tower.
Needing psychic tracking, she opened her storage space and pulled RJ back out into the cold. “Search for people,” Joanna commanded quietly. “See if you can get a lock on Greg.”
RJ closed her eyes, breathing deeply as her telepathic senses cut through the mountain air. She took a minute, her brow furrowing as she pushed past the lingering psychic static left by the mutated bear. Suddenly, her eyes flew open.
“I have it,” RJ gasped, pointing toward the massive rock formation towering behind the steel structure. “People. About 300 feet above us, inside the cliff.”
Joanna looked up, squinting at the towering wall of stone. How was that possible? The cliff face was completely sheer and steep, offering no visible ledges, paths, or entry points from the ground. It was a solid wall of mountain rock.
Joanna looked up at the sheer rock face, cupped her hands around her mouth, and called out into the crisp mountain air. A few moments passed before a woman tentatively peeked over the high edge, her expression deeply hesitant as she looked down through the falling snow.
Joanna gave a reassuring wave, her voice carrying up the cliff side. “Is Greg there?”
A second later, another figure moved beside the woman, and Greg peeks over the edge. The moment his eyes landed on Joanna, his face lit up with absolute relief. He turned to the woman excitedly. “She is the one I told you about!”
Without wasting any time, Greg throws down a long rope ladder, letting it unravel down the steep cliff face. “Guys, come on up!”
Joanna looked at the ladder, which swayed precariously in the winter wind and looked completely old and questionable. She shook her head with a dry chuckle. “Yeah… no thanks.”
With a swift wave of her hand, she grabbed RJ and activated her ability, bypassing the steep climb entirely. An instant later, she landed both of them directly inside the mouth of the cliff cave.
Greg and the woman blinked in absolute surprise, stepping back as the two women materialized right out of thin air onto the stone floor in front of them.
The interior of the mountain was unlike anything Joanna had expected. An earth user within the group had systematically hollowed out the core of the cliff, carving several small, structured rooms directly into the ancient stone. The result was a genius, self-contained subterranean dwelling that completely isolated the inhabitants from the freezing temperatures and the monsters below.

Joanna looked around, genuinely amazed by the craftsmanship. The main cavern served as a cozy central living space, with smoothly polished rock floors and arches that perfectly distributed the weight of the
ountain overhead. Branching off from the small hub were compact sleeping quarters, a tiny communal kitchen area, and a secure storage alcove. Gentle, flickering light cast long shadows from small oil lamps placed in neatly chiseled recessed shelves.
Ventilation shafts had been meticulously bored diagonally up to the surface, drawing fresh winter air into the chambers while keeping the bitter winds out. Near the back of the common area sat a stone basin filled with fresh snow hauled down from the cliff openings, slowly melting from the ambient warmth of the hearth to provide clean drinking water. Off to the side, a private alcove featured a cleverly carved stone toilet where waste fell straight down a narrow, vertical tunnel, dropping safely away out of sight to the absolute base of the mountain.
Living within this masterfully engineered sanctuary were twelve survivors. They were a mix of local townspeople and a few travelers who had been stranded when the apocalypse hit, all huddled together around a low, stone-carved hearth. Some were wrapped in heavy woolen blankets, while two young children sat on woven reed mats, quietly playing with wooden blocks near the warmth of the fire. An elderly man sat in the corner tending to a small rack of drying mountain herbs, and a couple of younger men stood guard near the inner tunnels, their faces etched with the strain of long-term hiding but lightened by a profound sense of relief. They had managed to maintain a clean, orderly existence against all odds, creating a true hidden fortress in the sky.
Greg stepped forward from the group, his clothes slightly worn but his posture energetic as he grinned at Joanna. “Welcome to the citadel. It isn’t much, but it’s kept us alive while that thing was stalking the streets.”
Greg’s son, Kyle, and his wife, Mandy, waved to Joanna. Greg pointed out his aunt, Christie, sitting by the fire with her grandpa.
