warmth and chatter of the cafeteria faded behind them as Joanna and her team finished up their dinner. Stepping out into the crisp mountain air, they all agreed that everyone just wanted to relax tonight inside her pocket dimension. With a quick movement of her wrist, Joanna activated her storage space, and a second later, the core team stepped inside the safe, climate-controlled warehouse.
Joanna walked toward the front crates where she had deposited her loot, intending to pull out the massive baseball-sized stone for Briggs to examine. Suddenly, she froze.
Her hand hovered over the empty shelf. It wasn’t in her warehouse.
“Where is it?” Joanna muttered, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy edge.
Hearing the tension in her voice, Julian, Jake, and RJ hurried into the deeper aisles of the storage area. They followed a faint, pulsing violet luminescence that was radiating from the far corner of the warehouse floor.
When they rounded the final stack of crates, the entire group came to a dead halt. Piper stood there, but she was completely overtaken by her mutation. She had fully shifted into her mutant plant form, a terrifying apex predator of thick, thorny vines and vibrant, poisonous flowers, Except right now, it looked like happy hour at the botanical gardens.
The plant was actively devouring the monster core and moving in a bizarre, thoroughly drunken state. It swayed sluggishly from side to side like a guy who had three too many margaritas at a corporate holiday party. Its massive, venomous petals drooped heavily like lazy eyelids, while its heavy vines coiled and uncoiled along the concrete, unsteadily doing the worm and shimmering in pure, ecstatic delight. A low, rhythmic, vibrating purr echoed through its stems-sounding suspiciously like a lawnmower with a bad muffler-as the last solid pieces of the baseball-sized stone dissolved into a glittering violet dust, absorbing straight into its roots.
“What just happened?” Jake breathed, his hands instinctively taking on a metallic sheen as he braced
himself.
The heavy, suffocating psychic static that they had felt in the mountain town suddenly spiked inside the warehouse, vibrating right through the floorboards as the plant loudly and drunkenly burped out a small cloud of purple mist. It then listed heavily to the left, leaning against a stack of canned beans for support.
RJ took a step back, her hands flying to her temples as she felt a sudden, massive shockwave ripple through the mental plane. A look of pure, comedic dread washed over her face. “Joanna, the energy from that bear… it’s merging with her mutated plant network,” RJ panicked, her voice shaking violently. “Will Piper turn evil? Wait, is she singing?”
The mutant plant slouched even lower against the stack of canned beans, its vines twitching rhythmically. Suddenly, a raspy, garbled noise echoed through the warehouse. To everyone’s absolute horror, the plant started singing in a deeply intoxicated voice.
“Twi-n-kle… twi-n-kle… lil’ sta-a-ar…” it droned out, slurring the syllables as its venomous flowers bobbed off-beat.
Joanna, Julian, Jake, and RJ stood completely paralyzed, their eyes wide as they realized they could actually hear the performance loud and clear. It wasn’t a psychic projection; the plant was literally vibrating its stems to produce a terrifyingly loud, tone-deaf melody.

Down by Joanna’s boots, Titan the corgi let out a pathetic, high-pitched whimper. The little dog covered his snout with both paws, visibly suffering from the sheer assault on his canine ears.
“How I… won-der… whatchu… hic… are…” the plant belted out, dropping a few loose petals onto the concrete as it hit a painfully flat high note.
Jake slowly lowered his metallic arms, his tactical survival instincts entirely useless against this development. “I’ve fought zombies, rogue soldiers, and a giant mutated bear,” he whispered, staring blankly at the swaying flora. “But nobody prepared me for a drunk, karaoke-singing houseplant.”
“Piper!” Joanna called out, her voice cutting through the atrocious vocal performance.
The drunken mutant plant paused its rendition of the nursery rhyme, its central stalk tilting unsteadily toward the sound. With a clumsy, scraping rustle of its roots, it began to stumble over to the group, swaying like a sailor in a gale.
“FRRRRIIIEEEND!” it yelled in a booming, raspy voice that rattled the warehouse shelving. The massive, venomous flowers bobbed enthusiastically as a few vines reached out to give a clumsy, floppy wave. “Piper… loves… the grape juice!”
Jolie, who had just stepped into the warehouse behind the group, paused dead in her tracks. Her eyes blinked in pure confusion. “Did she… did she say grape juice? Was the world-ending, dark-violet radioactive monster core just ‘grape juice’ to her?”
Before anyone could answer, the plant’s glazed, drooping petals locked onto Briggs. Standing tall and imposing at the back of the group, the rugged soldier looked like the last person on earth who wanted to deal with an affectionate botanical nightmare.
“Come here, Mr. Hot Stuff!” the plant rasped, its thick vines extending like giant, needy arms.
Briggs froze in absolute horror, his face turning a ghostly shade of white as the massive, thorny mass launched itself directly at him. In an instant, he was completely engulfed. Heavy, sap-covered vines wrapped around his waist and shoulders, dragging him into an aggressive, uncomfortably tight hug. A giant, vibrant flower aggressively rubbed against his cheek, dusting his face in bright yellow pollen while smaller tendrils playfully patted his chest.
“Can we make sproutlings together?!” Piper crooned loudly, her massive leaves flapping in excitement. “You’re so strong! Our baby little trees would be magnificent!”
“Get it off! Joanna, get it off me!” Briggs choked out, pinned entirely against a crate of rations, his eyes wide with utter panic. “It wants to cross-pollinate with me! Why is it talking about sproutlings?!”
“Hold still, my little oak tree!” the plant droned, cooing loudly as it squeezed him tighter.
Joanna rolled her eyes, stepping into the fray. Channeling her immense super strength, she planted her boots onto the concrete floor and grabbed a fistful of the plant’s main center stalk. With a mighty heave, she tore the clinging, protesting flora completely off the terrified soldier.
“Nooo! My husband!” the plant wailed, its vines flailing dramatically through the air as Joanna dragged its heavy, sluggish mass across the warehouse floor. It dead-weighted itself, scraping along the concrete like a toddler throwing a tantrum in a grocery store aisle.
Joanna didn’t slow down. She dragged the unsteady, singing mutant straight out of the storage aisles and over to the edge of the healing hot spring. With one final, forceful shove, she dumped the entire drunken
