Chapter 287 They Get Back To Evercrest Base

Greg exchanged a quick, sober look with Mandy before turning back to Joanna, a profound sense of relief washing over his face as he accepted her lifeline.

Within thirty minutes, the survivors had packed up every single thing they owned. Joanna stepped forward and looked at the pile of crates, bundles, and bedrolls. “I can store these for you,” she said simply. With a smooth wave of her hand, the heavy luggage vanished instantly into her storage space.

RJ smirked as she watched the sheer, unadulterated shock wash over everyone’s faces. She remembered when her own face had looked exactly like that when she first saw that trick.

Once they stepped out of the cave, Joanna waved her hand again, pulling three cars out of her inventory and lining them up on the snowy mountain road below. She turned to RJ. “Help get them down the rope and load the people up. I’ll be back in ten minutes.”

Before anyone could ask questions, Joanna teleported back down to the empty town. The scene on the streets was devastating. Without the mutated bear’s psychic energy keeping them anchored in stasis, the controlled townspeople had stopped breathing; they now lay frozen and dead in the snow. It was a sad, heavy sight to see.

Brushing the sorrow aside, Joanna worked with lethal efficiency. She teleported rapidly through the empty homes, stripping them of every useful resource. Canned food, winter coats, tools, blankets, and medicine— anything that wasn’t nailed to the floor, she took and stored away.

After completing her final sweep, she teleported directly back to RJ at the vehicles. With a flick of her wrist, she pulled Julian and Jake out of her storage space, keeping Kailee behind to continue recovering in the healing hot spring.

The twelve survivors piled into the three cars while Joanna’s core team climbed into The Beast. Julian took the wheel, and the small convoy drove out into the late afternoon light as the snow continued to fall. By the time total darkness blanketed the valley, the headlights of the vehicles illuminated the massive, unyielding shield of the container wall. They had made it back to the base, safe, loaded with an empire of supplies, and with a dozen new lives rescued from the brink of winter.

Joanna handed the new survivors over to Levi to get them situated, then walked toward a shipping container in the back. Someone had painted a red cross on it, signaling it as a hospital. Nice touch, she thought.

She entered, finding Michelle and Warren hunched over microscopes, deeply focused on studying samples. In the corner, behind a set of sturdy metal bars someone had constructed to contain her, Leo’s zombie aunt sat still on a bed. Joanna looked surprised. Joanna still remembered when she saw the aunt at Leo’s farm, and the woman was an aggressive monster that hissed violently. Now, she looked a lot better-her skin tone was improving, and she didn’t look quite so… dead. Joanna knew she could ask about that later.

She quickly explained what had happened to Kailee, pulling her out of the storage space and carrying her to a spare bed. Though she looked a lot better, she was still pale.

“I can run some tests on her and keep watch over her tonight,” Michelle said, stepping over to check her pulse.

Suddenly, Caleb burst into the room and ran straight for Kailee. He grabbed her tight and held her close. “I just heard,” he said, tears welling in his eyes. “How are you?”

Kailee smiled and ruffled his hair. “I am fine, silly. The Boss’s water works miracles.” Caleb had fallen into a

ep sleep earlier from pure exhaustion, which was why he never knew about the attack until now.

Joanna gave a few words of comfort to ease his mind, then quietly left them behind for the night/

Joanna messaged everyone that she was going to eat dinner in the cafeteria before going into her space. Everything else could wait. Slowly, her whole team filed into the warm room except for Kailee and Caleb. The heavy fuel generators hummed steadily in the background, pumping thick waves of heat through the insulated container walls. The air inside the cafeteria felt incredibly warm and cozy, completely melting away the biting chill of the mountain air. They gathered around the tables, shedding their heavy winter jackets as they loaded their plates with hot roasted turkey, savory ham, and tons of delicious side dishes

A few minutes later, Greg and the new survivors walked in with Levi, only to freeze completely dead in their tracks at the doorway. Stepping out of the cold darkness into a room that was so perfectly heated and filled with the comforting aroma of a holiday feast made their jaws drop. A few of them literally rubbed their eyes in sheer disbelief as they stared at the steaming layout. To people who had been rationing stale scraps and melting snow in a cold cliffside cave, this wasn’t just a meal-it looked like a hallucination. Their eyes went wide as saucers, completely dumbfounded by how anyone could possibly live this comfortably and eat this incredibly good in the middle of a brutal apocalypse. Levi just chuckled at their bewildered expressions and led them down to the other end of the long tables to get their plates and eat.

As dinner got underway, Briggs and Jolie explained the recent changes and organizational updates around the base. The conversation quickly shifted when Jake spoke up about what had happened to Kailee, his expression serious. RJ then shared the eerie details of what they had encountered in the town, building up to the climax of the battle.
