Chapter 290 Settling In For The Winter

Over the next six months, Joanna found the steady routine oddly soothing. Building the base, training with the soldiers, and absorbing zombie cores provided a quiet rhythm to their subarctic isolation. Piper’s mutant plant form had gone into hibernation shortly after absorbing the massive core, though she had distinctly mentioned she would wake up in the spring. Everyone kept busy, and the best part of being snowed in was knowing the rest of the world was stuck as well. A few avalanches even roared down the mountains over those five months, but they never reached the safety of the base.
Finally, the long winter began to break as the first true signs of a mid-spring thaw reached the mountain valley. The relentless, blinding blizzards gave way to crisp morning air, and the thick sheets of ice covering the outer container wall started to drip, revealing the indestructible mountain of concrete/beneath.
Joanna stood atop the three-high fortification, her eyes scanning the changing landscape. The winter had been a crucible, but her team had emerged from it completely transformed. Thanks to the steady diet of high-grade zombie cores they harvested and absorbed daily, the evolutionary leap was staggering. At level 6, the air around her team practically hummed with power.
Julian walked up the metal scaffolding to join her, his presence heralded by the faint, rhythmic snap of static electricity rolling off his shoulders. The cold CEO persona was back, but his eyes were sharper, glowing with a deep, lethal violet hue when he channeled his energy.
“The scouting perimeter is clear for three miles,” he reported, his voice effortlessly cutting through the wind. “If any strays wander out of the tree line, Jake can feel the iron in their blood before they even hit the snow.”
“Good,” Joanna said, turning to look back at the bustling inner perimeter. “How are the new teams holding up?”
“They’re eager,” Julian smirked slightly. “When you have a crew where even the kid and the corgi can flatten a small army, people tend to fall in line.”
It wasn’t an exaggeration. Down in the courtyard, eleven-year-old Raven was laughing, casually chatting with a row of songbirds that perched directly on her arm, her unique ability to speak to animals fully amplified by her new rank. Beside her, Titan the corgi trotted along, his small body radiating a dense, gravity-altering aura. With a playful huff, Titan manipulated the gravity vectors around his paws, floating a few inches off the frozen ground and making heavy debris nearby hover effortlessly in mid-air. Nearby, Allen and Kailee were testing their combined elements, throwing synchronized shockwaves of wind and earth that completely obliterated a row of practice boulders near the foothills.
With the fortress fully secured and the headquarters completed, Joanna knew it was time to address the mysteries they had put on hold before the deep freeze. She walked down to the command container, where Levi was waiting with a neat stack of legal files.
“The roads are opening up soon, Joanna,” Levi said, his expression turning solemn as he tapped a folder labeled with Elliot’s corporate seals. “We survived the worst winter in history, but the world outside didn’t stop turning. It’s time to find out what Elliot has been building while we were buried in the snow.”
Joanna looked out the reinforced window toward the southern ridges. The valley was theirs, their power was unmatched, and any single one of them could take down an entire horde alone. The winter of survival was officially over. The spring of reckoning had begun.
A few days later, Caleb approached Joanna just as she finished a grueling training session with the strength- power soldiers. She wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead, her level 6 muscles barely even fatigued by

the heavy exertion.
We need to talk,” Caleb said, his expression unusually serious.

Sensing the gravity in his tone, Joanna nodded. She followed him across the bustling inner courtyard and into the newly constructed headquarters’ command center. When she stepped through the door, she found her entire core team already gathered around the massive central folding table.
She took a seat at the head of the table. Caleb sat down directly on her left, while Julian stepped up, his shoulders crackling with a faint, residual current of violet static electricity, and took his place on her right The rest of the room fell dead silent, all eyes locking onto the young dreamweaver.
Caleb leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table as he looked at Joanna. “For the last month of the freeze, while the blizzards were locking us in, I haven’t just been sleeping,” he explained, his voice tight. I’ve been dreamweaving. I managed to project my consciousness out into the wider grid, and I’ve picked up some critical intel.”
Caleb leaned in, resting his elbows on the map-strewn table. “Everything you knew from your premonition dreams, Joanna… you have to throw it completely out the window.”
Joanna’s posture instantly stiffened, and the room fell dead silent. Beside her, the crackle of Julian’s violet electricity stopped entirely.
“What do you mean?” Joanna asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous, razor-sharp register.
