Chapter 291 Caleb Grows A Strange Sense Of Humor
What are they looking for then?” RJ asked, her brow furrowing as she leaned over the table.
Finished
Caleb spoke, his voice heavy with grim certainty. “Resources, people, power. They will be descending like locusts, stripping the land clean of anything and anyone left standing. Worse, that weasel Jax and Elliot have already gained leadership positions over there and control their own specialized squad. They know about you, Joanna, and they know the full potential of your team.”
Briggs spoke up, his voice cold and commanding as his heavy level 6 presence subtly weighed on the room. “We need to decide if we want to meet them out in the open or fight them on our home turf. Inside this fortress, we have the advantage.”
“Yeah, but there is more,” Caleb nodded, tapping a spot on the regional map near their neighboring allies. “The faction has already planted two moles-one inside Fletcher’s group and another inside Glacier’s group. They are actively gathering intel and getting ready to feed the information straight back to their new leaders. If that happens, the element of surprise is gone, and both Dillon and Westridge will fall before they even know they’re under attack. They will recruit or take out Glacier and Fletcher.”
Joanna’s eyes locked onto Caleb, her expression hardening. “Do you know who the moles are?” she demanded, leaning forward. “Give me names, Caleb.”
Caleb sighed heavily, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “I don’t have names,” he admitted honestly, his expression distant. “Honestly, their signature is seen as a color base. When I send mental threads, the image is like seeing scenarios in infrared. People attach themselves to others through actions and reactions. I can follow color paths and hear thoughts through impressions. Sometimes images filter through, but the more color it is, the more I know which reaction or action it’s based on.”
Briggs stared at Caleb, his heavy cold presence dropping the temperature in the room by a visible five degrees. He didn’t slam the table. He just blinked, very slowly. “Fantastic,” Briggs said, his voice dripping with icy, deadpan disbelief. “Our entire defense strategy now relies on Mood Ring espionage. Should I instruct the guards to look out for suspiciously magenta behavior, Caleb, or do we just shoot anyone who looks too much like a neon sign?”
Joanna smirked, the grim tension in the room breaking for just a second, but she pushed right through it. “Would it be best if we take you with us?” she asked, looking back to Caleb.
Caleb nodded. “Yes. But we have another problem.”
Allen scoffed from the corner, leaning back in his chair. “Oh, wonderful. Let me guess, the infrared ghosts also have heat-seeking guard dogs?”
“Yeah, close,” Caleb said, ignoring the sarcasm. “The past few months have made you and most of the team really well known. Bottom line is once they recognize you, they will tell Elliot and Jax.”
Jolie spoke up, tapping her chin thoughtfully. “So if we disguise ourselves we should be good? Maybe
change our names?”
Julian burst out laughing, a sharp, patronizing sound.
“Oh, brilliant plan, Jolie,” Julian said with smooth sarcasm, his voice shifting into his dominant, high- powered CEO cadence. “Because once the Demoness pulls out her sickle sword and starts teleporting, a fake name isn’t throwing anyone off. Not to mention my assets. When a grid-shattering, high-voltage electric

storm incinerates the enemy, people notice. Premium power like mine doesn’t exactly blend into the background. It’s a dead giveaway.”
Caleb spoke up, cutting through the tension. “They definitely know you and Joanna. But you can blend in as a non-powered human, Julian. It should buy you time.”
Briggs didn’t miss a beat. His gaze swept over the table, cold and commanding. “Then let’s leave Julian here at the base,” he ordered, the latent heat of his fire power humming just beneath his skin. “Me and Joanna will go and find the moles.”
At the mere thought of Briggs and Joanna out there together, alone, Julian’s jaw tightened. A low crackle broke the silence as arcs of blue electricity subtly rippled across his knuckles, discharging silently against his chair.
Joanna spoke up, raising her hands to cut them off, looking both exasperated and amused. “Stop, guys. We can just dress differently. And honestly, no one is better at gaining trust with pure sunshine and kindness than Jolie and RJ.”
She turned her eyes to Julian, her tone final. “Julian, you and Briggs will come but you stay in the space with Caleb. Honestly, you are just too flashy to blend into a crowd.”
Briggs smirked, leaning back and crossing his arms as the latent heat around him cooled. “She’s right, Executioner,” Briggs chucked, his voice dripping with dry amusement. “It’s hard to pass as a humble refugee when your posture screams ‘corporate hostile takeover’ and your hair looks like it costs more than our entire food ration inventory.”
Julian scoffed, looking away, clearly annoyed but knowing better than to argue with Joanna’s logic.
“I think Kailee needs to come,” Caleb spoke up suddenly, his eyes losing focus for a split second. “Her past is coming up in the future.”
