Chapter 293 Joanna’s Base Shaped For Survival

Jonna didn’t bother hiding her grin, nudging Julian with her elbow. “Careful, Julian,” she teased, her voice dripping with amusement. “If you get any more possessive over a bird, I’m going to start wondering who you’re actually jealous of.”
Before Julian could even formulate an outraged executive reply, Joanna scooped up Titan, the stubby corgi, into her arms. “I’ll leave you three to settle your domestic dispute,” she called over her shoulder, walking away and leaving Julian and Raven behind to bicker with the shamelessly flirting, bloated pigeon.
Stepping out of the cave, Joanna looked over the camp. It had become a true post-apocalyptic fortress during the brutal winter. Hundreds of specialized shipping containers had been meticulously arranged engineered specifically to withstand epic winter freezes and scorching summer heat. Stacked three containers high and three containers wide, the massive structures formed an impenetrable perimeter while creating warm, cozy living quarters for her people inside. At the very front of the fortress stood their ultimate defense: a super-strong, towering gate forged by Jake and his incredible metal-manipulation powers, sealing them safely away from the dangers of the subarctic wasteland.
But their survival relied on more than just heavy steel defenses.
Joanna walked toward the heart of the compound, where a massive, insulated greenhouse structure hummed with life. Knowing exactly how devastating this winter would be, she had custom-designed a subarctic garden engineered to defy the elements. Dual-layered, triple-glazed polycarbonate panels trapped every scrap of weak northern sunlight, while a network of geothermal pipes pumped heat directly into the soil beds from deep underground.
Inside, the environment was a spectacular, vibrant contrast to the frozen wasteland outside. The air was thick with the rich, earthy scent of damp soil and oxygen. Because of Joanna’s foresight, the garden was overflowing with fresh, nutrient-dense produce. Towering wooden troughs were packed with cold-hardy root vegetables-sweet carrots, massive rutabagas, and earthy parsnips thrived beneath the surface. Lush, dense rows of kale, Swiss chard, and winter spinach burst from vertical hydroponic towers, their deep green leaves glowing under specialized LED grow lights. Heavy, thick-skinned winter squashes and pumpkins rested on reinforced mesh hammocks, while experimental patches of frost-tolerant cabbages and brussels sprouts grew in tight, perfectly organized rows.
Walking down the central aisle, Joanna spotted Willow, who was completely in her element. Willow loved working in the garden, her plant-manipulation powers making her the ultimate cultivator. Right now, Willow was kneeling by a patch of climbing peas, her hands glowing with a soft, emerald light. As she ran her fingers along a vine, tiny white flowers bloomed and instantly began curling into crisp, green pods.
“Looking beautiful in here, Willow,” Joanna said, leaning against a wooden planter bed. “It looks like we’ll have enough fresh greens to get everyone through the final stretch of the freeze.”
Willow looked up, wiping a smudge of dirt from her cheek with a proud smile. “We have more than just greens, Boss,” she said, rising. “The fruit trees are thriving inside the containers.”
Intrigued, Joanna followed Willow into a specialized wing of the fortress. To accommodate the trees, Joanna had brilliantly engineered three-story container stacks by hollowing out the internal floors. This created a soaring, climate-controlled atrium with twenty-six-foot ceilings.
The setup was a marvel of indoor agriculture. Instead of using dirt, the trees grew via advanced aeroponics, their roots suspended inside insulated drums. Automated misters blasted them with nutrient-rich water. To maximize the tight space, Joanna used ultra-dwarf varieties trained flat against wire trellises along the steel

Joanna’s engineering was only half the secret. Willow’s plant-manipulation powers supercharged the entre process, forcing the trees to grow and produce fruit ten times faster than normal.
“Look at this,” Willow whispered, gesturing to the vibrant canopy.
Despite the blizzard outside, the room was bursting with life. Dwarf apple trees sagged with ruby-red fruit, and the air smelled of sweet lemons. Willow cupped a branch, her palms pulsing with emerald light. Right before Joanna’s eyes, blossoms instantly swelled into plump, glossy cherries.
Willow plucked a ripe cherry and offered it to Joanna with a grin. “With your design and my spark, we’re outproducing the old world.”
Taking a bite of the juicy peach, Joanna thanked Willow for her hard work. She then walked into the spacious cafeteria located right next to the greenhouse wing. With Titan, her thick-furred corgi, waddling cheerfully beside her, she looked like a young college girl on holiday. It was a stark contrast to the ruthless “Demoness” persona she wore like armor in the outside world.
This fortress was her safe haven. In a lawless, dying world where most people fell asleep counting their remaining bullets and woke up shivering in the dirt, Joanna’s compound offered something truly miraculous: absolute peace of mind. Here, people didn’t have to worry about frozen limbs, starvation, or a sudden midnight raid by desperate scavengers.
Inside these walls, the brutal subarctic reality simply ceased to exist. Families sat around sturdy tables, laughing over hot meals made from fresh, crisp vegetables and sweet greenhouse fruits. The air was warm, clean, and filled with the comforting hum of stable electricity. Children played tag without fear, and the elderly could rest without keeping one hand on a weapon. Safe behind Jake’s impenetrable gate and nestled within Joanna’s brilliant engineering, the residents didn’t just survive-they lived. It was a thriving oasis of humanity, shielded perfectly from the frozen nightmare just outside the steel doors.
Joanna walked up to the large corner table where Danielle, Josiah, Uncle Nate, Nana, and Ryan were sitting together. The moment they spotted her, a wave of warmth seemed to ripple through the group. Surviving the harsh winter alongside them had given Joanna something she had never known before: a profound sense of being genuinely cared for, filling a void that her own mother and biological family had left behind long ago.
“Look at you, walking around in a t-shirt while it’s sub-zero outside,” Nana chided gently, immediately reaching over to pat Joanna’s arm and checking her for signs of chill,
Josiah chuckled, sliding a chair out for her, while Danielle pushed a freshly poured cup of hot herbal tea toward her. Uncle Nate and Ryan immediately started fussing over her schedule, asking if she had eaten, if she had slept, and playfully demanding she take a break from her endless engineering projects.
They laughed easily with her, teasing her about Titan’s ever-growing appetite as the corgi begged shamelessly for scraps. Uncle Nate slid the rest of his eggs onto the floor for him without looking. It was such a small thing. Joanna wrapped both hands around her tea and let the warmth soak in, the “Demoness” nowhere to be found.
Ryan leaned forward, eyes dancing with excitement. “Joanna, ever since Nana and Danielle got water power, me and Nate trained every day. Last week, when Nate got wind power, I almost gave up. But this morning… I finally awakened!”
Joanna smiled, a genuine wave of warmth washing over her. “That’s amazing, Ryan. What is it?”
