The rest of the family were amazed, leaning in and asking a dozen questions at once. It turned out only Danielle had known about Ryan’s new ability beforehand. Even Joanna, with all her dreams of the post- apocalyptic world, had never heard of anyone awakening an invisibility power before.
After several more rounds of congratulations and excited chatter, the atmosphere turned a bit more serious Joanna shared her upcoming plans to leave the fortress for a while. Though they would miss her, they all understood the necessity of her journey and warmly said their goodbyes, reminding her to stay safe.
With Titan still waddling contentedly at her heels, Joanna continued her walk through the bustling compound. As she neared the security hub, she spotted Will and Kailee huddled over a map, quietly discussing the upcoming winter patrol routes.
Over the winter, the blooming romance between these two had become one of the most entertaining spectacles for the entire group to watch. Will, a regular soldier with a brilliantly sharp military mind, was a cheerful, happy-go-lucky guy who was completely hopeless when it came to romance. Kailee had been practically chasing him for months, dropping glaringly obvious clues about her feelings. Yet, for all his tactical brilliance, Will remained hilariously clueless about women.
As Joanna and Titan approached, Kailee was leaning slightly over the desk, flashing Will a bright, suggestive smile. Will, however, just grinned back with his usual easygoing energy, entirely missing the look in her eyes as he bounced on his heels.
“If we double the perimeter sweep on the ridge, we minimize the blind spot!” Will said cheerfully, tapping the map with a broad smile. “What do you think, Kailee?”
Kailee let out a soft sigh, resting her chin in her hand. “I think you look great when you’re analyzing strategic choke points, Will.”
Will beamed, entirely missing the flirtatious cue. “Right? This jacket is super comfortable too! Anyway, about the thermal rations-”
Joanna cleared her throat, holding back a smirk as Titan let out a small huff. Will turned to her with a bright, welcoming wave, completely oblivious to Kailee’s playful exasperation.
Joanna joined the conversation, offering a smart tactical adjustment to their routes that perfectly resolved the blind spot. Will nodded in total admiration of her logic, but before he could dive back into his maps, Joanna looked at him with an amused expression. She asked if he was interested in tag-teaming with them on their upcoming trip.
Will’s face lit up with immediate excitement. “Heck yeah, Boss! Your zombie pied piper is always down to go on missions!”
It was funny because it was true. Will had never once left the base without magnetically attracting a trail of zombies behind him-a fact he cheerfully acknowledged himself. The camp had quietly formalized it, scheduling him for lure duty whenever they needed live target practice.
Kailee, however, immediately frowned at the suggestion. She turned to Joanna, her tone laced with practical worry. “But Boss, he isn’t in the blood partnership. How can he come with us if he can’t enter into the space?”
Joanna thought about it. Will was a regular guy without flashy elemental powers, which actually made him

perfect for this mission. He would provide the perfect cover for them as they searched for a mole.

Before she could say anything, Will’s easygoing grin suddenly crumbled. His eyes welled up with tears, stayling both women. “I have waited for this so long!” he choked out, wiping his face. “I want to join the blood partnership too!”
Joanna was genuinely surprised, her eyebrows shooting up. She had no idea he felt so deeply about it. Looking at the usually cheerful soldier, she asked, “Are you sure, Will? It’s a permanent commitment.”
He nodded vigorously, sniffing back his tears. “Yes! Ever since the Commander joined, I wanted to join tog. was just always too shy to ask.”
Seeing his rare, emotional breakthrough, Kailee immediately stepped in. “Oh, Will, it’s okay,” she cooed sliding closer to comfort him. She wrapped her hands soothingly around his biceps, taking full advantage of the moment to slide her palms up and down his firmly muscled arms. “You don’t ever have to be shy with
us.”
Will just sniffled, completely focused on Joanna and totally oblivious to Kailee enjoying the feel of his physique.
Joanna rolled her eyes at Kailee’s sheer shamelessness but didn’t comment, instead pulling out the contract She pricked Will’s finger, pressing it to the paper. The moment the blood made contact, the bond snapped into place, and a sudden, massive flood of knowledge about Joanna’s mystical storage space rushed directly into his brain.
Will’s teary eyes widened in absolute shock, his jaw dropping as he processed the sheer scale of what he was looking at.
“It’s a level 14?!” he gasped, completely reeling. “Wow, this space is a total cheat for the apocalypse! No wonder you are so amazing, Boss!”
Kailee, still happily holding onto his arms, laughed at his blown-away expression, while Joanna just offered a small, knowing smirk. Will was officially in the inner circle now, and he was about to find out just how much easier living in the apocalypse was going to get.
Joanna pulled Will, Titan, and Kailee inside her pocket space, letting them step out of the physical confines of the subarctic base. She told them all to take it easy and relax for a while before they had to head out.
Kailee, never one to miss an opportunity for romance, immediately eyed Will with a playful grin. “I’m going to show him around, and get him a mind link watch.” she announced to Joanna, already plotting her next move. “And then I think I’m going to have Will check out the healing hot spring with me.”
Will just smiled his usual easygoing smile, completely oblivious to her underlying intentions and genuinely excited just to see the layout of the space and soothe his tired muscles.
