Chapter 309 Someone Is Watching Us

The afternoon air was a fraction less bitter outside the apartment complex, but Joanna’s team was too busy panicking to appreciate the weather.

Will stumbled, his boots dragging as he lunged blindly and grabbed a handful of Briggs’s heavy, dirt- streaked canvas jacket.

“I don’t feel so good,” Will muttered, looking like an extra in a zombie movie.

“RJ, help me with him,” Briggs barked, adjusting his worn leather pack and grabbing Will before he could faceplant into the asphalt.

Joanna looked back, her eyebrows shooting up. Will was covered in iridescent, pulsing residue from the building’s overgrown vines. It was glowing a sickly neon color against his jacket, slowly eating through the fabric and turning his skin an alarming shade of gray.

“Move, now,” Joanna commanded, gesturing toward a narrow, dumpster-choked side alley.

They ducked into the shadows, heading straight toward a rusted garbage container. She was just about to pull Will inside the secure hideout when RJ froze.

“Boss, no!” RJ hissed.

Joanna paused, her hand hovering on the door latch. “What’s wrong, RJ?”

“Someone is watching us.” RJ stared hard at a grime-covered building to their right. “Two people inside. They are watching us.”

Joanna looked down at Will, who was currently fading faster than cheap hair dye. “Fine. Plan B.”

Before anyone could ask what Plan B was, Joanna bent down and scooped Will entirely off his feet, lifting him into a flawless, effortless bridal carry with the casual ease of someone picking up a bag of groceries. Superhuman strength certainly had its perks.

The alley went dead silent.

RJ and Briggs just stared, blinking in absolute, synchronized shock. Briggs opened his mouth, closed it, and looked from Joanna’s perfectly unbothered face down to Will, who was now cradled like a Victorian child with the vapors.

“Don’t just stand there gaping,” Joanna whispered, her eyes flashing. “We need to move before our audience comes down to ask for autographs. RJ, lead the way. Briggs, watch our six.”

RJ pivoted on his heel, abandoning the compromised alleyway and leading the team several blocks back through the maze of streets toward the apartment building where they were staying. Briggs brought up the rear, keeping his eyes peeled for tails while trying not to laugh.

As they hurried down the sidewalk, Will let out a pathetic, low moan, his head rolling against Joanna’s shoulder. Her superhuman strength meant her stride didn’t even wobble despite the distance, but the sheer absurdity of the situation wasn’t lost on Briggs.

Tapping the interface of his storage space watch, Briggs aimed his wrist and captured the moment. With a

few subtle, distinct clicks, he snapped a handful of high-quality pictures of the team’s youngest member being securely cradled and instantly hit ‘send’ to the group chat.

WA’s eyes cracked open, his skin a ghostly, pale gray from the glowing vine residue. He felt his own wrist device vibrate with a notification and let out a weak, agonizing whine.

“Commander…” Will whimpered, his voice trembling with a mix of motion sickness and pure mortification. “Tell him to stop that… please. I look ridiculous.”

Briggs smirked, checking his watch as the images finished uploading. “Hey, history needs to be documented, kid. Smile for the fans.”

“One more word, Briggs, and you can carry him the rest of the way,” Joanna muttered without breaking her pace, her arms locked firmly beneath Will as they finally slipped through the front entrance of their apartment building.

Joanna looked over to Brad’s office but didn’t see him there. Without pausing, she ran straight up to the fourth floor, her arms still full of a groaning, pale Will.

RJ nodded her head quickly. “It’s safe, boss.”

Before anyone could blink, Joanna teleported the entire team directly into the room.

Kailee walked out from the bedroom and gasped, rushing straight over to Will’s side. Her eyes widened in panic as she took in his ghostly complexion. Kailee asked, “Boss, what is wrong with William?”

“They can explain everything to you,” Joanna said, her voice tight with urgency. “Let’s get him in the space first. Where is Caleb?”

“He is still in meditation,” Kailee replied, her hands hovering anxiously near Will.

“RJ, stay in here guarding the room,” Joanna commanded. “We will be right back.”

With a swift wave of her hand, Joanna teleported herself, Will, Kailee, and Briggs directly into her storage space. The harsh winter cold vanished instantly, replaced by a gentle ambient light that warmed their skin the moment they arrived.

Julian emerged from the Villa, his brow furrowed in a deep frown. “I saw the pictures on the chat. Joanna, let me take him.”

Joanna shook her head, maintaining her grip. “No need, let’s get him in the spring.”

As they moved toward the water, Briggs chimed in, filling Kailee and Julian in on the details of Will’s unfortunate run-in with the black vines.

Julian listened intently, his expression darkening as he looked at the glowing residue. He spoke quietly, his voice heavy with disbelief. “It is hard to imagine a plant surviving this winter.”

Joanna took the bags from Briggs and opened them to check the contents before leaving the group behind to help Will. Inside, she found a solid haul of zombie cores rolling around the bottom, along with an assortment of random household items they could easily trade downstairs. Satisfied, Joanna jumped out of her pocket space and materialized back in the apartment room, where RJ was intently watching Caleb.
