Jolie slowed the van as they approached a red light, shifting her weight in the seat. She cleared her throat, her tone suddenly dropping into a quieter, more self-conscious cadence. “Hey… can I ask you something about Rachel’s crew?”
Joanna’s knowing smile returned instantly. She leaned back against the headrest, turning to face her friend. “You want to talk about Allen.”
Jolie’s cheeks flushed a faint pink under the dashboard lights. “I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t have to,” Joanna teased gently. “I saw the way he walked out of that office behind you. For a guy who acts paranoid around his sister Rachel, he looked entirely distracted.”
“He was just being thorough during the cash count,” Jolie argued, though a small smile tugged at the corner of her lips. “But… Did you notice how tight the air got when Marcus the bodyguard chambered that round? I was terrified, boss! I honestly thought we were in deep trouble. I only glanced at Allen but he looked calm and controlled.”
“He did,” Joanna validated softly, her humor fading into sincere approval. “He’s sharp, Jolie. And he’s dangerous. But he was looking at you like you were the only fascinating thing in that entire dusty warehouse. When Rachel brings him to Aurora in a few months, I think they will be calling on us for certain.”
Jolie let out a breathy laugh, pulling the van into the underground parking garage of their hotel. “Let’s just survive Felton first.”
They parked the van in a secluded corner of the concrete structure, close to the service elevators. The air down here was cool, smelling of damp concrete and exhaust fumes.
“Alright,” Joanna said, unbuckling her seatbelt and snapping back into business mode. “We aren’t leaving these crates in the vehicle overnight. We need them upstairs.”
“Are you crazy?” Jolie asked, throwing the van into park. “Those wooden crates weigh a ton. The hotel staff is going to ask questions if they see us hauling industrial crates up to a luxury suite.”
“Then we don’t let them see,” Joanna replied smoothly. “Grab the luggage cart from the elevator alcove. We’ll cover them with our trench coats and the spare blankets from the back of the van. If anyone asks, it’s high-end sculpting equipment for an exhibition.”
Moving quickly, Jolie fetched the heavy-duty brass luggage rack while Joanna unlatched the van’s rear doors. Together, they gripped the handles of the first heavy wooden crate. They both strained, muscles tightening as they hoisted the massive box out of the bumper and slid it onto the base of the cart.
“Holy hidden treasures,” Jolie hissed under her breath, wiping a quick bead of sweat from her

“That’s the density of high-grade, unrefined stone,” Joanna whispered back, her excitement flaring all over again as her palms pressed against the rough, splintered wood. “Two more. Let’s go.”
With coordinated effort, they stacked the remaining two crates, balancing the heavy load meticulously. Joanna threw their heavy winter coats and a dark utility tarp over the pile, tucking the edges in until it looked like nothing more than an oversized heap of bulky, eccentric luggage.
Jolie pushed from behind while Joanna guided the front, navigating the heavy, rattling cart into the service elevator. The mirrored walls of the elevator reflected two young women looking entirely too flushed and determined for a standard weekend trip.
When the bell dinged on their floor, they wheeled the cart rapidly down the carpeted hallway, the wheels sinking into the plush fabric, making the pushing twice as hard. Joanna swiped the keycard, the lock clicking green, and they shoved the cart through the threshold, slamming the door shut behind them.
