“I’ll get started on those phone records,” Jolie said, sitting up and going to her luggage. She pulled her laptop from her pack, already heading back toward the door. “I’m going downstairs to work at the hotel bar since I’m a little hungry anyway. Let’s see if I can trace this David Foster before we try dialing the number.”

“Perfect,” Joanna replied, her voice tight with a strange, thrumming energy. “After you find out information on David and Megan, see if there’s an obituary on her as well. Stay away from the room for a while. Give me at least a few hours and don’t disturb me under any circumstances. I am going to consume the jade.”

Jolie nodded, recognizing the intensity in her friend’s eyes, and slipped out of the room, closing the door firmly behind her.

Left alone, Joanna needed to prepare. Her hands were shaking with anticipation. She quickly changed into comfortable clothes, washed her face with cold water to anchor herself, and returned to sit cross-legged on the bed. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out the small velvet pouch of uncut emeralds she had bought earlier.

Closing her eyes, Joanna breathed in deep and pulled her consciousness inward, stepping across the threshold into her pocket dimension. The small emeralds in her hand instantly dissolved, seamlessly absorbed by the space.

The hotel room vanished, replaced by the vast, breathtaking expanse of her inner world. In her past life-the brutal dream timeline-this space had been a cramped, suffocating joke. It had barely held a single shipping container of stale rations. She remembered being desperately hungry, staring at those tiny walls, cursing her own uselessness at not upgrading the space. But now? Now the space was a massive, sweeping sanctuary. Fields of rich earth stretched out toward an endless horizon, a clean slate waiting to be filled.

The moment she stood on the soil, the dimension itself seemed to wake up. A violent, intoxicating shiver rippled through the air, vibrating right down into her bones. The space didn’t just want the jade; it was starving for it. A heavy, primitive echo bounced in her mind, a frantic pulse demanding to be fed: Now. Give it to me now.

Joanna smiled, stripping down and taking a dip into her pure spiritual spring water. She soaked for five minutes, drinking large, revitalizing gulps. She had learned from past mistakes. Rather than tossing all the crates into her space at once, she was going to absorb each rock one by one. It was a tactical choice; she couldn’t afford to suffer a violent psychic backlash and lose consciousness again.

Feeling energized, she got dressed and picked a few ripe, plump tomatoes from her tomato plant nearby. Over the past month, this single plant had produced an abundance of fruit, each tomato carrying subtle energy properties from being grown in the spiritual soil. She harvested a small bowl, planning to use them to replenish her stamina while absorbing the jade.

She exited back into the physical world, setting the bowl of tomatoes and a flask of her spring water next to her on the bed. Walking over to the heavy luggage cart, she dumped the wooden crates out onto the ground. Three massive piles of rough, gray-green rocks littered the hotel room floor, tracking fine dust all over the plush carpet. Joanna mentally reminded herself to leave a massive tip for the cleaning staff, feeling a mild pang of guilt.

Returning to her bed, she closed her eyes and extended a hand toward the floor. Because she could manifest her power from a distance, she focused her mind on just one single piece of the raw jade rock.
