Chapter 314 The Giant Mutant Rabbits

Finished

Juan moved like a lightning bolt, arcs of blinding blue electricity crackling off his fists as he punched through the front line, frying a dozen mutant rabbits to a crisp with every strike. Beside him, Briggs roared, his hands igniting with a roaring fire power that turned the asphalt into a scorching gauntlet of flames.

“Don’t let them surround us!” RJ yelled. She planted her feet, channeling her mental telepathy into a powerful psychic wave that blasted across the highway, instantly freezing dozens of the oversized monsters dead in their tracks.

The moment they stopped moving, Bubbles the cat went to work. The massive tabby blurred across the road, pouncing on the immobilized beasts with terrifying agility. Crunch. Crunch. With a single, devastating bite, the rabbits died instantly under his jaws.

“My turn!” Will yelled. Eager to prove himself, he exhaled deeply, unleashing a thick, swirling cloud of iridescent poison mist directly at a massive cluster of charging rabbits. The moment the vapor hit them, they convulsed and collapsed.

“Incoming from the left!” Kailee slammed her hands forward, using her wind power to create a localized gale-force shockwave, pulsing dozens of the surviving rabbits straight off the asphalt and crashing deep into the dark tree lines.

Amidst the roaring flames, psychic static, and flying fur, Joanna walked with absolute calm. She sauntered over to the traitor, who was lying bloody and weak on the ground. He was still breathing, but he had been thoroughly chewed through by the mutants before they intervened.

She bent over him, resting her hands on her knees. “What is the name of your group?” she demanded, her voice dangerously low.

The man spit a mouthful of thick blood onto the ground, a wild, completely unhinged smile stretching across his mangled face. “We are the Blood Fang Pack,” he wheezed, his eyes wide and manic. “You will never destroy us! We are many!”

Joanna froze. Something pulled hard at the very edge of her consciousness. Bloodfang? That name sounded incredibly, dangerously familiar.

The man’s wild grin morphed into a sudden, dangerous glint as his eyes locked onto Joanna’s chest in the deep shadows of the highway. It was a pitch-black night, and the only sources of illumination were the silver, ghostly glow of the crescent moon above and the stark, shaking beam of the crashed motorcycle’s headlight cutting sideways across the asphalt. Desperate for a final act of spite, the traitor began to lift his trembling, blood-soaked arm, the air around his palm rapidly distorting with a gathering spark of orange flame. He was going to push out one last fireball.

She didn’t give him the chance.

Before his fingers could fully ignite, Joanna’s hand shot forward like a steel piston, her fingers locking instantly around his neck in a vice grip. With a surge of her superhuman strength, she lifted his entire weight over her head using just one hand, cutting off his breath in a choked gasp. Without a single trace of hesitation, she hurled him backward and slammed him down against the cold asphalt with terrifying velocity.

He impacted the road heavily, and the spark of fire magic in his hand fizzled away to nothing as he lay completely still under the stark beam of the motorcycle headlight.

Joanna stepped back, the chaotic noises of the conflict beginning to die down in the moonlit dark behind The danger from the traitor was taken care of, but the name Bloodfang still echoed in her mind, a puzzle piece she couldn’t quite grasp.

In the quiet aftermath, Bubbles–the newest member of her family-could be heard purring like a chainsaw. A juicy mutant rabbit hung limp in his massive jaws. He dropped the body onto the asphalt, looking up at her with glowing eyes.

“How many snacks can I take inside the house with me, nice lady?”

Joanna huffed a laugh under the silver moonlight. “Are you okay eating them raw?”

Instead of answering, Bubbles opened his jaws and inhaled the rabbit, swallowing it whole in two quick bites.

She smiled. “You are kinda cute, Bubbles!”

At the compliment, the giant, fifty-pound cat launched himself into Joanna’s arms for a tight hug. Thanks to her superhuman strength, his immense size didn’t bother her at all. She buried her face in his soft fur, making his purr rumble even louder.

With a wave of her hand, she swept a bunch of the clean rabbit carcasses into her storage space, purposefully leaving the poisoned ones Will had killed.

“Bubbles,” she spoke softly, scratching his ears. “Don’t eat anything Will kills. He has poison now.”

Bubbles flicked his tail, completely ignoring Will. Joanna gave the massive tabby one more affectionate squeeze. “Okay, Bubbles, back in my space. You can go find another snack.”

The cat vanished in a ripple of energy, eager to hunt down his food.
