But to Joanna, the world had just narrowed down to a single, urgent voice. She was hearing Caleb speak to her directly through their mental mind link.
STOP TALKING JOANNA! Caleb’s voice shouted inside her mind, sharp with panic. There is a bug hidden on his window shelf!
Joanna raised a flat hand toward Glacier, telling him to freeze. Her pulse hammered, but her face stayed flat. She ignored the chairs and circled his desk, and he leaned back from her as she came.
“What-” Glacier began, his voice laced with suspicion.
Joanna instantly held a single finger up to her lips, signaling him to be absolutely quiet.
She walked around the desk, fingers tracing the cold wood of the window sill until they found the hidden groove. Her skin met metal tucked beneath the ledge.
An electronic bug sat nestled in the shadows.
She looked up, her eyes locking onto Glacier’s. Watching her fingers, his expression shifted instantly from defensive confusion to pure, unadulterated fury. Someone had breached his inner sanctum.
Without a second thought, Joanna closed her fingers around the device. With a single squeeze of her superhuman strength, she crushed the electronic bug into worthless pieces, letting the mangled plastic and copper wires drop carelessly into the trash can beside his desk.
“How did you know?” Glacier asked, his voice a harsh whisper that barely cut through the tense silence of the room. His eyes were still fixed on the trash can where the crushed pieces of the listening device lay.
Instead of answering, Joanna waved her hand. The air rippled with a sharp distortion of spatial energy, and Caleb materialized right in front of the desk.
The sudden appearance made Glacier jump backward, his chair scraping loudly against the floor as his hand instinctively flew to the armrest, frost ready to gather on his palm once more. Joanna paid no mind to his panic, merely offering a faint, dry smirk. “I brought my team with me,” she said smoothly, gesturing to the newcomer. “This is Caleb, the dream weaver.”
Joanna watched Caleb closely, fully expecting the young man to be intimidated by Glacier’s imposing figure and the deadly, frost-bitten aura that permeated the room. Instead, Caleb’s face completely lit up.
“Glacier,” Caleb said softly, his eyes wide with a warmth that felt entirely out of place in the freezing office. “I am so happy to finally meet you.”
Before Joanna could even register the lack of fear, Caleb stepped forward and enthusiastically grabbed Glacier’s hand, pumping it up and down in a firm greeting.
Glacier stopped moving entirely. He slowly looked down at their joined hands, then up at Caleb, his face a picture of absolute, utter confusion. The feared ruler of the ice palace, known to freeze his enemies alive and leave them on spikes, was completely throwing his gears trying to process the sheer friendliness of the pale young man standing before him.
Joanna shook her head. Glacier still made her nervous, and she never understood how Caleb wasn’t worried

about him. Caleb finally let go of Glacier’s hand, almost unwillingly. Annoyed by the lingering greeting, Joanna grabbed Caleb by the back of his neck, picking him up entirely and depositing him firmly into one The leather seats. Glacier slowly sat back down in his own chair as Joanna took her seat across from him.
Caleb, completely unfazed, continued talking in a soft, happy voice. “Glacier! I wanted to tell you how incredible you were securing the northern sector last month. There are a lot of ability users in that group if you stay patient.”
Thrown completely off balance, Glacier mumbled a brief acknowledgement, still looking at Caleb warily.
“I also understand that the closure of the southern entry point to the city was the best call,” Caleb surged ahead, leaning forward with bright eyes. “But you want to put up a wall at several points soon before April. A zombie horde will come that way.”
Joanna cut him off, thoroughly annoyed. “Caleb!”
He shut up momentarily, offering a sheepish grin. “Sorry, Joanna. Anyway, once Joanna arrived, I put out my threads to find Sam. He is the mole. Also, he is currently in bed with Pebbles in her room.”
“What?!” Glacier roared.
Joanna blinked, her mind racing. Who on earth was Pebbles?
Glacier didn’t wait to explain. He snatched a walkie-talkie off his desk, his knuckles turning white as he slammed down the talk button. “Anderson! Kick down Pebbles’ door now! Bring her and that snake Sam down here to my office in five minutes!”
Watching the sudden explosion of fury, Joanna tensed up, her nerves spiking at how unhinged and psycho Glacier could get when pushed. Caleb, however, still happily chatted away like he was Glacier’s number one fan.
