“You know, sis, I once dreamed that you did this to me,” Joanna whispered, leaning in close as Alice convulsed in agony. “Now, I get to do it to you!”

Joanna stood up, sheathing her knife, and simply watched. Alice slowly bled out on the cold floor, her body trembling as the life drained from her. Every tear that spilled from Alice’s eyes, every muffled cry, and every terrified, desperate whimper she gave was the exact same torment Joanna had suffered in her nightmare.

Once Alice’s body finally went completely limp and her eyes grew vacant, Joanna knelt back down. She methodically undid the zip ties, peeled the duct tape off her mouth, and left the body looking like an internal faction execution.

With a silent surge of spatial energy, Joanna teleported completely out of the building. Jax was already missing from the immediate perimeter, but she wasn’t worried about him right now.

She blinked directly back into her spatial paradise, appearing right in front of her waiting team. The air of vengeance still clung to her, but the moment she materialized, Julian stepped forward and grabbed her. He pulled her tightly against his chest, wrapping his arms around her securely. Locked in his embrace, the cold tension finally broke, and Joanna slowly relaxed against him.

Joanna noticed Caleb was finally awake from his meditation, his posture relaxed but his expression deeply solemn. The team hadn’t seen what she did on the outside, but looking at her now, they somehow just knew.

One by one, her team stepped up and gave her a hug, offering silent, unwavering support. Even Glacier stepped forward, picking her up off her feet to give her a massive, rib-cracking squeeze. “Good for you, Boss! That skank deserved it.”

A wobbly laugh escaped Joanna as Glacier set her down. Another heavy, suffocating weight that had pressed on her chest for months was entirely gone. It felt good. It was raw, absolute justice for the dream version of herself.

Joanna looked back at everyone, her eyes shifting to Caleb as she pulled the ski mask completely off her face. “Okay, Dreamweaver, what is next?”

Caleb smiled, the warmth returning to his expression as he focused on the layout he had mapped in his mind. “The basement that has Megan is where the data and an armory are kept. Elliot and Neil just started experiments with zombies and small-time ability users. This base absorbed the survivors from Tech Valley, which is why they have so many people. Also, Jax has awakened an ability.”

Briggs scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest as a dark look crossed his face. “Of course the snake would awaken something. What is it?”

Caleb sighed, his shoulder slumping slightly under the weight of the information. “He can melt into shadows. Very dangerous. He is going to be a problem with that skill.”

RJ spoke up immediately, his hand instinctively resting on his weapon. “Can we kill him?”

“Not unless there are no shadows anywhere,” Caleb replied grimly.

“Let’s hit the data center and the armory,” Joanna said, her voice brimming with renewed determination. “That should keep Jax’s hands tied for a while.”

Caleb smiled. “You also took away the faction’s face-Alice. With her gone, Jax is going to have a hard time fighting for control.”

Kailee spoke up, her brows drawing together as she thought about the power dynamic downstairs. “If that’s true, my cousin will probably be released.”

Caleb nodded. “I always told you Megan would end up with Elliot.”

Joanna patted Kailee on the shoulder, giving her a reassuring squeeze. “Don’t worry. Before we leave, we can take her out as well.”

Briggs renewed his authority, his posture straightening as he looked down at the notepad. “Okay, we need to take out this area where security is strongest.”

Glacier and Julian leaned forward, their eyes scanning the scribbled layout. It didn’t take long for the tactical discussion to devolve, and soon a fresh argument broke out between the three of them on exactly how they should hit the lab.

Joanna sighed, rubbing her forehead. “You boys keep talking, but we move at night.”

RJ checked her watch, tapping the glass. “Night is about four hours away.”

“I am napping,” Joanna announced, turning away from the bickering trio and heading toward the villa. “But you guys keep watch. Get me if anything happens.”

Joanna walked upstairs to her room, her mind heavy with the day’s events. She reached out, turned the knob, and opened her door-only to freeze completely in the doorway.

That fat tabby cat, Bubbles, was busy kneading biscuits on her comforter right in the middle of the bed.

Bubbles paused his steady pawing, keeping one fat paw pressed deep into the comforter as he tilted his round head back. He looked up in absolute bliss at Joanna, blinking his golden eyes lazily before letting out a soft, chirping greeting. “Meow. Meow.”

Joanna leaned against the doorframe, a small smile cracking through her serious expression.
