The next morning, the team assembled around the large dining table to eat a hearty breakfast before the massive day of construction ahead. As they passed the plates around, Joanna and Julian couldn’t help but exchange quiet, knowing glances over their coffee mugs, the lingering warmth of the night still visible in the relaxed lines of their posture.
Briggs caught the subtle looks and rolled his eyes in fond irritation, but he chose to stay quiet, focusing instead on his map and his breakfast. The rest of the team remained blissfully oblivious, fueled up on food, and focused on the mission. Once the last plates were cleared and their gear was secured, Joanna gathered everyone together and, with a swift wave of her hand, exited the space.
They materialized back inside the chilly reality of Glacier’s office, ready to tackle the southern sector wall and prepare for whatever Fletcher had waiting for them.
The team stepped out of the freezing office and walked down to the hotel reception area, where they immediately met up with Will. He was standing by the entrance, flanked by Jake, Allen, and fifteen powerful ability users who had driven all the way down from Joanna’s base.
Glacier immediately called an emergency meeting right there in the expansive reception area, clearing a space on the dusty front desk to unroll a tactical blueprint. He pointed a gloved finger at the diagram of the southern sector. “We build here,” Glacier stated firmly, tracing the boundaries. “We utilize the crumbling architecture to create a perimeter, but it has to be completely locked down.”
Jake stepped closer to the desk, squinting at the structural intersections on the map. “We can have the earth users pile the foundation, but we need to reinforce it with metal at certain key points. If we integrate structural steel braces at the primary joints, it will offer maximum stability against any external force.”
Caleb sighed, his expression turning deeply serious as he looked around the circle. “It’s not just about stopping vehicles or intruders. The earthquakes are happening in a month. The earthquakes will tear this region apart. The wall needs to be able to withstand everything, or this entire base will be crushed.”
A heavy silence fell over the room as the reality of the timeline sank in. No one wasted any time. Soon, specific orders were passed out to everyone, with earth and metal users coordinating teams to head out and begin moving the heavy debris.
As the reception area erupted into a frenzy of activity, Joanna stepped up to Glacier. She tightly grabbed his arm, pulling him away from the map. “Let the builders do their work,” Joanna said, her eyes flashing with determination. “You and I need to head out and meet Fletcher right now.”
Julian, RJ, Will, and Kailee immediately stepped forward to form a defensive perimeter, staying

behind to help with zombie and mutant pest control so the builders wouldn’t be interrupted while working in the open.
Briggs immediately took charge of the remaining forces in the reception area, his voice booming with military authority as he commanded the men to organize supplies. “The metal users need metal to reinforce these joints,” Briggs barked, clapping his hands together. “We will go move cars for them.” He scanned the room, grabbed a few strength-based users by the shoulders, and moved out with them into the freezing streets to start hauling heavy vehicles into position.
Seeing the teams immediately split up and start their work, Joanna didn’t waste another second. She grabbed both Caleb and Glacier, expanding her spatial energy around them. With a series of rapid, dizzying jumps, she bypassed the frozen miles entirely, teleporting them in multiple quick blinks across the wasteland straight to Fletcher’s building in Westridge.
They materialized abruptly inside the structural shadow of the towering facility, the sudden shift in altitude and location cutting off the howling wind of Dillon and leaving them standing right at the threshold of Fletcher’s domain.
Joanna, Glacier, and Caleb bypassed the outer corridors and stepped straight into Fletcher’s private office, only to find the expansive room completely empty. Instead of searching the perimeter, the three of them simply sat down around Fletcher’s polished executive desk to make themselves at home.
“Fletcher is on his way back right now,” Caleb said, his eyes faintly glowing as he released his mental threads on the hallway outside.
Even with the warlord approaching, the group remained completely relaxed. Glacier leaned back in his chair, a rare, amused smirk cutting across his face. “Hey, you know why zombies make such terrible roommates?” he asked, looking over at the other two. “Because they always bring a dead atmosphere to the party, and they never stop borrowing your body wash.”
Joanna smiled, a soft laugh escaping her as the lingering tension from their travel completely vanished.
Caleb chuckled, leaning forward onto the desk to match Glacier’s energy. “Oh, I’ve got one. Why did the zombie go to school?” He paused for dramatic effect. “To improve his ‘dead- ication-though his teachers kept complaining that he was only interested in the brainier students.”
The room lightens up completely, their easy banter and shared laughter echoing off the walls of the ruthless warlord’s private sanctuary just moments before his arrival.
The door swung open without warning.
Fletcher stepped through, shoulders sagging, dark hollows carved under his eyes. He looked like a man who hadn’t slept in days. Then he saw Glacier, and everything in him went still.

The temperature plunged. Frost bloomed along the edge of the desk, and the air turned sharp enough to sting.
