Chapter 337 Bubbles Eats Dante!

Joanna crossed the courtyard, snow crunching beneath her boots, Raven and Titan trailing alongside her while Bubbles padded along at his own unhurried pace, tail swaying like a king surveying his lands. They passed rows of containers, a group of kids building a lopsided snowman, and one of the perimeter guards who nodded to her as they went, before the ground sloped down toward a wide opening carved into the rock – the animal cave.
The chamber inside was warmer than the courtyard, lit by strings of salvaged bulbs and lined with pens and perches for the various creatures Joanna had gathered over the months. Straw rustled underfoot, and a chorus of soft clucks and coos rose from the far corner.
There, perched along a wooden rail, sat the pigeon federation – a dozen round, waddling shapes each roughly the size of a basketball, feathers puffed out in comically oversized bodies, cooing at each other in low, contented rumbles.
The moment Joanna stepped into view, one of them went absolutely still, head snapping toward her with laser focus, and let out a rapid, urgent series of coos.
Raven’s eyes lit up. “He says – Joanna! My love returns! I have dreamed of this moment-“”
Dante never got to finish whatever he was cooing next.
Bubbles moved like lightning, launching off the ground in a single powerful leap, jaws snapping shut around Dante mid-flight with a muffled, feathery thump.
“BUBBLES!” Joanna shouted, lunging forward. “Put him down!”
“Mmmrfl mrrph mmf,” Bubbles said, tail flicking with great satisfaction, Dante’s round feathery body sticking halfway out of his mouth, wings flapping frantically against his whiskers.
“That means lunch,” Raven translated helpfully, eyes wide.
Muffled, panicked cooing erupted from around Bubbles’s jaws, rising in pitch, wings beating uselessly against his whiskers.
“He’s saying – I don’t think I should translate all of that,” Raven said, wincing. “But the gist is ‘let me go, you monster.””
The rest of the pigeon federation erupted into panicked chaos, a dozen basketball-sized bodies scattering off the perch in every direction, feathers flying, one unfortunate pigeon toppling directly into a water trough with a loud splash. Titan, thrilled by the sudden pandemonium, began barking wildly and chasing the fleeing pigeons in circles, which only made the panic
worse.
“Bubbles! Drop him! NOW!” Joanna grabbed the cat by the scruff, and Bubbles let out an

indignant grumble but finally opened his jaws, releasing a very damp, very ruffled Dante onto the ground.
Dante flopped dramatically onto his back, wings splayed, cooing weakly and mournfully.
“He says he’s been violated,” Raven translated, biting back a laugh. “Betrayed. In his own home. In front of his federation.”
“He’s a giant rat pigeon, Boss, I was doing everyone a favor,” Bubbles muttered, licking a stray feather off his nose with zero remorse.
“He is not food,” Joanna said firmly, scooping Dante up gently in both hands. The pigeon immediately melted into her palms, cooing pitifully, milking the moment for everything it was worth. “Nobody eats Dante. Understood?”
Bubbles’s tail twitched. “Understood,” he grumbled, though his eyes lingered on Dante’s plump, round body with obvious longing.
Slowly, the chaos settled – Titan gave up the chase and trotted back to Raven’s side panting happily, the scattered pigeons crept back toward their perch one by one, cooing nervously, and the soggy pigeon climbed dripping out of the water trough looking thoroughly betrayed by life.
Joanna carried Dante back to the perch and set him down carefully. He puffed his chest out immediately, feathers still askew, and let out one long, wounded coo in Bubbles’s direction before turning back toward Joanna, cooing softly and sweetly.
Raven grinned. “He says – ‘you saved me. Be my Valentine.”
Joanna scratched gently under Dante’s chin, and he leaned into it, cooing contentedly, though he still shot the occasional wary glance toward Bubbles. “How’s the scouting going? Anything to report?”
Dante straightened up on the perch, puffing his chest out importantly and letting out a long string of cooing.
“He says it’s been hard with all the snow,” Raven translated. “Visibility’s bad, and half the federation doesn’t want to fly out in it. But he says a few times, they’ve spotted people out on the ridges – a few over from here. Not many. Just glimpses.”
Joanna’s brow furrowed slightly. “How many is a few? And how far?”
Dante cooed again, tilting his head.
“He says maybe three or four sightings, always far off, never close enough to get details,” Raven said. “Just shapes moving between the rocks.”
Joanna nodded slowly, filing that away. “Keep your distance from them. Don’t get close, don’t let
