Downstairs, the whole team was clustered near the base of the stairs exactly as Glacier had described Julian, RJ, Jake, Caleb, Kailee, Will, Briggs, and Allen, all in various states of impatient waiting, packs already slung over shoulders like they’d been ready to go for hours.

“Hey, guys,” Joanna called out, and every head turned at once.

Julian was the first to move, crossing the space between them in a few long strides – tall, imposing, and impossibly good-looking even bundled in cold-weather gear that did nothing to hide the easy strehin the way he carried himself. Joanna didn’t even try to resist the pull. She closed the last of the distance herself, grabbing him close and breathing him in, some tight knot in her chest finally loosening now that he was actually in her arms instead of just a voice on the mind link.

Julian let out a low growl against her hair, no real heat to it, just want. “From now on, keep me with you. No matter what. I hate being apart from you.”

Joanna squeezed him tighter for a moment before finally letting go, already knowing if the rest of the team weren’t standing right there, she would’ve kissed him properly. Instead, she settled for a lingering look, promising more later, before stepping back.

Behind her, the front door swung open, letting in a gust of cold air as Fletcher strode in from outside, brushing snow off his shoulders, just as Glacier came down the stairs behind Joanna.

Fletcher took one look at the scene – Julian still hovering close, Joanna’s team crowded at the bottom of the stairs with packs ready – and smirked. “Finally. Thought I was going to have to listen to Julian complain about missing you for another six hours straight.”

“I do not complain,” Julian said immediately.

“You complained this morning,” Briggs said. “To me. About the exact shade of gray the sky was because it reminded you of Boss’s eyes.”

Julian shot him a look sharp enough to cut glass. Briggs, wisely, said nothing further, though he was clearly biting back a grin.

Joanna huffed a laugh despite herself, shaking her head as she turned to address the group properly. “Alright – Glacier’s filled me in. Whoever’s coming with me, grab your things. We need to move fast; I don’t want to be away from the base too long.”

Fletcher’s smirk faded slightly, something more genuine slipping through. “Little Dove. When are you actually coming back?”

Joanna’s expression sobered, the teasing warmth from a moment ago giving way to something heavier.

“Honestly? I don’t know yet. Not until I’m sure my people are safe.” She glanced around at the group, half- formed reluctance already written across a few faces. “Why – does anyone actually need to stay here?”

Allen’s hand shot up immediately. “Not me, Boss! I’ll take care of Jolie. You just focus on catching whatever poison bush is out there trying to kill people.”

Joanna rolled her eyes, though the corner of her mouth twitched despite herself. “Nevermind. Forget I asked.” She looked around at the rest of them – Julian still standing close, RJ practically vibrating with impatience to move, Jake already adjusting his pack straps, Caleb grinning like this was the best news he’d

“I’ll check in with you two every day,” Joanna added, glancing toward Fletcher and Glacier. “Progres on the wall, anything unusual, anything at all – mind link, no excuses.”

Fletcher nodded, some of his usual easy arrogance returning. “We’ll hold it down, Little Dove. Ausont go getting yourself poisoned too.”

“No promises,” Joanna said dryly, already turning to gather the rest of her team. “Alright – let’s me We’ve got a lot of ground to cover, and I want everyone back at base before nightfall.”

–

Joanna raised a hand, gathering the whole team into her space with a wave — and just as the team blinked away into the familiar quiet dimness of her pocket dimension, both Fletcher and Glacier stepped forward at the exact same moment, wrapping her in a hug so sudden and so tight it nearly knocked the breath out of

her.

Startled, Joanna blinked, arms trapped between them for a second before she managed to pat both their backs somewhat awkwardly. “Uh – okay?”
