Chapter 361 Fletcher And Glacier Are Shocked

Fletcher and Glacier both slowed their steps, taking in the courtyard properly for the first time since arriving – and whatever teasing bravado either of them had carried through the gate quieted into something more subdued, almost reverent.

Rows of shipping containers stretched out in orderly lines, smoke curling steadily fro chimneys, doors painted in bright, cheerful colors that stood out sharply against the meting snow. People moved between them with purpose – carrying tools, hauling crates, calling greetings to each other across the open courtyard – while a cluster of children darted past, shrieking with laughter over some half-finished snow fort, utterly unconcerned with the state of the world beyond the walls.

Glacier’s eyes tracked a woman hanging laundry on a line strung between two containers, her clothes clean, her movements unhurried, nothing about her posture carrying the tight, hunted edge that had defined nearly everyone they’d encountered since the dead started walking.

“This is…” Fletcher trailed off, genuinely at a loss for the first time since he’d arrived.

“Not what I expected,” Glacier finished quietly, still scanning the courtyard like he half expected the peaceful scene to collapse into chaos at any second, old instincts refusing to fully believe what he was seeing.

Everywhere they looked, people wore clean, mended clothing instead of scavenged rags. Faces were full instead of gaunt, cheeks flushed pink from the crisp air rather than hollowed by hunger. Laughter actually carried across the open space instead of the tense, clipped silence that had become the default rhythm of survival everywhere else they’d been.

–

It was such a stark contrast to the world outside to Dillon’s half-finished walls and constant vigilance, to the ragged lines of survivors they’d passed through on the drive up, hollow-eyed and flinching at shadows. Here, people weren’t just surviving. They’d actually settled into something that looked, unmistakably, like living.

“I knew it was good here,” Fletcher said finally, voice quieter than Joanna had ever heard it, “but I didn’t realize it was this good.”

Joanna felt a small, quiet swell of pride at that, watching her people move through their day with an ease she still sometimes couldn’t quite believe she’d built. “It took a long time to get here,” she said simply. “Longer than I expected, some days.”

Glacier shook his head slowly, still looking around like he was trying to memorize it. “No wonder everyone keeps complaining about being stuck at Dillon instead.”

The small smile faded as Joanna shifted back into focus. “Come on – tour can wait. We’ve got a situation.”

She filled Fletcher and Glacier in as they walked, the full weight of the last few days spilling

out in clipped, efficient detail – Jolie’s poisoning, the tunnels, the ant swarm, Shane, the stolen supplies – leading them down into the underground bunker as she talked.

Glacier let out a low whistle as they descended, glancing around at the reinforced container walls, the steady warmth radiating from somewhere unseen. “Underground, away from snow and zombies? I’m jealous, Boss. Seriously.”

“Focus,” Joanna said, though there was no real heat in it.

By the time they reached the main corridor, Briggs and Julian were already deep in conversation with Jolie, heads bent over a section of wall near the far corner.

Jolie looked up the moment she spotted them. “Boss! Allen found something – a disturbance in the earth, right near the corner of the last container.”

Briggs straightened, expression grim. “These containers were built to function underground remember – each one’s fitted with filtered air vents, sealed systems so the air stays breathable without needing an external hookup.”

Joanna’s stomach tightened, already guessing where this was headed. “Show me.”

They moved through the bunker toward the far corner, where Jake and Allen were crouched low near the base of the last container, examining something just below one of the ventilation

grates.

Jake stood as they approached, wiping dirt from his hands. “Boss. Found it.”

Joanna crouched to see – the metal around one of the filtered vents was subtly warped, scorched at the edges like something had forced through rather than opened it. Beneath it, a narrow, almost perfectly circular tunnel bored into the packed earth, barely wide enough for a man, angled straight up toward the vent.

“Too clean for hand-dug,” Jake said. “No tools could manage this fast.”

Allen ran a hand along the smooth tunnel wall. “Ant work. Same as the ridge. If Shane’s people found a way to direct the swarm, they could’ve bored straight from outside to this vent.”

“Once they hit it,” Jake continued, “prying the grate loose is easy – nobody expects an entry point here. No patrols near the vents. Climb through, you’re inside the bunker.”

Joanna stared at the small, unassuming hole that had let a stranger walk straight into her most secure space. “So they tunneled to the wall, pried the vent, and let themselves in.” She nodded slowly, the last piece settling into place. “That makes sense, too – it’s why none of our ground patrols ever caught anything. The tunnels leading up to it were completely undisturbed from the surface. No digging anyone could spot, no collapsed ground, nothing. They had the ants do it all underneath, where we’d never think to look.”
