An hour later, the full team crowded into the meeting room, chairs scraping, boots propped on table legs where they shouldn’t have been. Danielle and Josiah had laid out a spread of bread, dried fruit, and a pot of something hot, and within thirty seconds of sitting down, the teasing began.
“Is that my seat?” Fletcher asked, eyeing Glacier.
“It’s a chair,” Glacier said. “You’re not in it.”
“It’s my spiritual chair.”
“You’ve been here forty minutes.”
“And yet it speaks to me.”
Julian reached for a biscuit. “Please don’t encourage him.”
Josiah slid a plate toward Briggs. “Sir, I put the good jam by you.”
“I don’t eat jam,” Briggs said flatly.
“You ate three biscuits with jam yesterday.”
“That was strategic.”
“Strategically delicious,” Caleb said, snagging the jar.
Joanna rapped her knuckles on the table. “Okay. Children. Updates.” She waited until the last snicker faded. “First: Annie. The snake agreed to act as an early warning system. If she sees ants or Shane’s people, she’ll rattle loud enough for us to hear it from the base. She’ll let me near her den. Nobody else.”
“So she’s picky,” Allen said.
“She ate three giant ants this morning. She’s earned it.”
‘Fair,” Allen said.
“Second, the poison.” Joanna held up the bagged perfume bottle. “Michelle and Warren confirmed it’s a neurotoxin. It knocks you out and scrambles your memory of the event. It wasn’t the bushes. Shane’s people sprayed Jolie directly.”
Jolie raised her good hand. “For the record, I’d like to formally complain about being sprayed by a stranger’s perfume.”

“Noted,” Joanna said.
a violation of my dignity.”
“You were also buried alive,” Ryan offered.
“That too. But the perfume bothers me more.”

Raven, Titan asleep on her feet, spoke up next. “The mole king found two tunnels entering the base. But only one spot has soil loose enough to tunnel through the rock. That’s the one Jake’s already patching.”
“Which means,” Jake said, “they can only really come through one place.”
“Unless they bring a bigger drill,” Noah said.
“Noah, nobody asked you to be hopeful and pessimistic.”
“I contain multitudes.”
Caleb cleared his throat. “My turn. The frost is almost gone. That’s when Shane plans to send the ants. He commands them with a pheromone made from sap and mushrooms.”
Joanna frowned. “So it’s not mind control?”
“No,” Caleb said. “It’s closer to a scent trail. Lure and direction, not a leash.”
“So he’s basically a very dedicated ant-whisperer with a hobby,” Fletcher said.
“A hobby that tried to kill Jolie,” Levi said.
“I’m not defending him. I’m just pointing out the résumé.”
Raven continued, ignoring them. “Dante, the president of the pigeon federation, reported that activity at Shane’s camp ramped up in the last day. Four groups went into the forest foraging.”
“Gathering supplies to lure the ants,” Briggs muttered.
“Sap, mushrooms, whatever they need for more pheromone,” Joanna agreed. “And the ants can attack easier once the snow’s gone. Less cover for us, easier digging for them.”
Levi nodded grimly. “Yeah, Boss. It looks like they’re coming from underground and over the wall.”
The room fell quiet for a beat, the jokes finally running out.
Glacier broke it first, reaching for the last biscuit. “Well. At least we have snacks.”

“Those are my snacks,” Fletcher said.
“Spiritual snacks?”
“Now you’re getting it.”

Caleb leaned forward, tapping the table. “The frost is probably gone in a matter of days Time is of the essence.”
The room quieted. Joanna looked around at her team. “Then let’s fix the tunnels first. How do we patch the spot where they meet up?”
“I can freeze the ground, Boss,” Glacier offered.
Joanna shook her head. “It’d slow them down, but it won’t stop them. Ice melts, and they’re patient.”
Allen rubbed his chin. “If we can get large rocks and clay dirt, we could pack the area solid. The challenge is drying it. Clay that wet won’t hold against a swarm.”
Joanna paused, then looked up sharply, a slow grin forming. “Briggs can heat it.”
Briggs glanced at his knuckles, a small flame flickering to life. “Fire-bake it into brick. Yeah. That works.”
