“I’m someone who can keep your sister safe,” Joanna said firmly. “But you have to trust me, Jake. Felton is a dead end for you. In Aurora, I can get you an apartment right near my property. It’s a quiet, secure neighborhood where you and Raven can go completely off the grid while the syndicate searches the city for you. They won’t think to look for a multi-million mob inheritance in a town like Aurora.”

Jake looked toward the bathroom door, where the sound of the running shower had just clicked off. The thought of Raven being hunted had kept him awake for weeks, but looking at Joanna, he felt a strange, sudden surge of hope. Her confidence was infectious.

He let out a long breath, the tension finally leaving his massive shoulders as he nodded. “Alright. We’ll go to Aurora.”

“Good,” Joanna said, mapping out the next steps with sharp precision. “Tomorrow morning, I want you to go to your bank and pull out as much liquidity as you can. Liquidate what you need to, convert it to cash or secure certified checks, and buy two tickets for Aurora. Don’t leave a paper trail if you can avoid it. We have our flight at 1:00pm. I will give you my phone number and meet you at the airport.” Jake gave Joanna his cell phone and she entered it into his cell. “We can stay in touch by text.”

Jake nodded, his expression turning resolute. “I’ll handle the financials first thing when the branches open.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Jake,” Joanna said, turning back toward the suite door. “Keep your guard up tonight. We’re leaving this city very soon. Tomorrow I will set up an apartment for you in my name so they can’t find you once we get to Aurora. I will also have my lawyer set up an untraceable account so you can move your money there safely. I need a shower myself so text me if anything comes up otherwise I will see you tomorrow.

Joanna, tired after such a long day, made her way up to her room. She saw Jolie passed out in her bed and smiled softly. Her team was growing and Joanna felt satisfied. She was exhausted so after a hot shower, she immediately climbed into her bed and passed out within seconds.

The next morning, the harsh sunlight of Felton sliced through the gaps in the heavy blackout curtains.

Joanna blinked her eyes open, her body aching slightly from the physical exertion of the previous night’s fight. The clock on the nightstand read 8:30 AM.

“Morning, sleepyhead,” Jolie’s cheerful voice called out.

Joanna sat up, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. Jolie was already sitting at the suite’s small dining table, which was loaded with a spread of hot coffee, fresh croissants, scrambled eggs, and crispy bacon from room service.

“You’re a lifesaver,” Joanna murmured, sliding out of bed and padding over to the table. She grabbed a cup of coffee, taking a long, grateful sip.

“You look like you went ten rounds with a freight train,” Jolie observed, eyeing her closely while spreading jam on a croissant. “I checked the van’s dashcam footage when you got back last night, but the rain obscured everything. What exactly happened in that alley after you picked up the necklace?”

Between bites of eggs, Joanna recounted the entire sequence of events. She explained the sudden rainstorm, the terrifying entrance of the young girl Raven, and her massive brother Jake, the ambush by the professional kidnappers, and how she rescued them and neutralized the kidnappers.

Jolie paused, her fork hovering in mid-air, her eyes wide with shock. “Wait… so not only did you secure the necklace, but you casually rescued a multi-million-dollar mob heir and his little sister?”
