Firsted

Back at the table, Joanna poured two fresh mugs of coffee. The dark, rich steam rose between her and Jake, casting faint, shifting shadows over their faces in the dim overhead light. She took a slow sip, her eyes locking onto his across the rim.

“Jake,” Joanna began, her voice dropping into a low, velvety cadence that immediately charged the air with mystery. “Last night, I told you I had a dream about that alleyway. But I didn’t tell you the whole truth about why I was there.”

Jake leaned forward, his massive forearms resting on the tabletop. He watched her intently, completely captivated by the unearthly calm radiating from her. “What do you mean?”

“The dream I had wasn’t an isolated incident,” Joanna whispered, leaning closer. The shadows seemed to deepen around them as she spoke with an absolute, haunting conviction. “It’s part of a larger pattern. A window into something inescapable. I know what is coming, Jake. And it’s not just the syndicate you need to be running from.”

Jake’s brow furrowed, his military instincts on high alert. “What’s coming, Joanna?”

“The end of the world as we know it,” she said flatly, her voice devoid of fear, carrying only cold, stark reality. “An apocalypse. In a few months, the global infrastructure will collapse entirely. It starts with a virus that has no cure and is highly contagious. There are also catastrophic earthquakes that will shatter the power grids, followed by a violent mutation-a pathogen that reanimates the dead. Zombies, Jake. Total death, lawlessness, and destruction on a scale humanity has never seen. I dreamed the entire future up to five years from now.”

Jake sat completely frozen, utterly floored by the words coming out of her mouth. If anyone else had said this, he would have laughed, walked out the door, and never looked back. But this was the woman who had predicted the exact minute a storm would break in a Felton alleyway. This was the woman who had predicted his sister’s kidnapping and handled professional hitmen with what appeared to be superhuman physical strength.

He took a slow, heavy breath, his mind furiously processing the sheer absurdity of the claim against the absolute certainty in her eyes. He looked over his shoulder at Raven laughing at a cartoon in the living room, then looked back at Joanna, his face pale.

“Zombies… earthquakes…” Jake rasped out, his voice thick as he swallowed the hard truth. He didn’t dismiss it; he took it entirely in. “You’re saying the whole world is going to become a war

zone.”

“Yes,” Joanna nodded, her expression resolute. “And that’s why you’re here in Aurora. We aren’t just hiding from your uncle’s syndicate, Jake. We are preparing to survive the collapse.”

“I’m building a team, Jake,” Joanna said, her eyes boring into his with absolute clarity. “A tight, fiercely loyal unit of people who can actually hold the line when the world falls apart. I want

you and Raven on it.”

Finished

Jake didn’t answer immediately. He looked down at his coffee mug, the steam swirling in the dim light. The weight of what she was describing-the absolute collapse of civilization-would have sounded insane coming from anyone else. But Joanna had already proved she was living a step ahead of the rest of the world.

“If what you’re saying is true,” Jake said, his voice dropping into a rough, raspy whisper, “then the money my uncle left us is just useless paper in a few months. Digital numbers on a screen that won’t mean a damn thing when the grid goes dark.” He looked back up, his jaw set in a hard, resolute line. “Tell me what we need. I’ll liquidate the rest of the accounts tomorrow morning. If my inheritance can buy the supplies that keep my sister alive, I’ll burn through every single dollar.”
