Chapter 46 Only three months left
She leaned back in her chair, checking to ensure Jolie and Raven were still completely engrossed in the television in the next room. Then, she turned her full attention back to Jake.
“I have a secret, Jake. It’s the real reason I can store thousands of pounds of fresh produce and heavy equipment without anyone noticing,” she whispered. “I possess an independent storage space. An isolated pocket dimension that travels with me, completely separate from our reality. Time doesn’t move inside it, meaning food stays boiling hot or perfectly fresh forever, and its carrying capacity is virtually limitless.”
Jake’s brow furrowed, a faint, skeptical shadow passing over his face. “An independent space? Joanna, I believe your dreams, but that sounds like-”
“Watch,” Joanna interrupted smoothly.
She held her right hand flat over the empty space between them on the wooden table. She closed her eyes for a split second, pulling a thread of her consciousness inward toward the bubble of her upgraded dimension.
Manifest.
A soft, brief ripple of distorted air shimmered right above the table. A heartbeat later, a perfectly round, wildly fragrant, dew-covered red tomato materialized out of thin air, dropping onto the table with a soft thud and rolling a few inches until it pressed against Jake’s forearm. It was freezing cold, smelling faintly of rich, soil.
Jake violently flinched backward, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. He stared at the tomato, then at Joanna’s empty, open palm, his chest heaving as his mind completely short- circuited. He reached out with a trembling hand, his massive fingers picking up the piece of fruit. It was solid. Real. The cold moisture left a damp print on his skin.
“You… you pulled this out of nowhere,” Jake breathed, utterly floored for the second time in a single hour. He looked at her with a profound, terrifying level of awe. “You really are a prophet.”
“I’m a survivor,” Joanna corrected gently, taking the tomato back and setting it aside. “And I need my team to be just as lethal as I am. You have years of elite military deployment under your belt, Jake. You know how to take down multiple targets in close-quarters combat without making a sound. I can handle myself, but Jolie needs a much sharper edge, and eventually, the others we bring in will need to know how to kill.”
Jake took a deep breath, the shock of the pocket dimension slowly settling into a cold, mission- focused focus. He rested his hands on the table, nodding fiercely. “You want me to train the
team.”
“I want you to teach everyone everything you know about tactical combat, blades, and hand-to-

hand survival.” Joanna said.

“Consider it done,” Jake replied without a second of hesitation. “We start tomorrow. Five in the morning, down in the secure basement garage or the courtyard before anyone else in the building wakes up. We’ll run drills every single day until our movements are pure muscle memory.” He paused, his expression turning deeply protective as he looked toward the living room. “And I want Raven joining the training, too. She’s eleven, but she needs to know how to defend herself if she ever gets separated from me in a crowd of those… things.”
“Agreed,” Joanna said, extending her hand across the dark wood of the table. “I also have a gym with weights in the back room. Welcome to the end of the world, Jake.”
Jake reached out, his massive hand clamping down around hers in a fierce, unshakeable pact. “Let’s get to work.”
The next morning at 5:00 AM, the training began. Over the next week, Jake proved to be an incredibly organized and methodical instructor, running Joanna, Jolie, and even young Raven through intense combat drills. With only three months left until the world fell apart, the urgency was palpable. Jake chose to shield his sister from the terrifying reality of the zombies. simply telling her she needed to grow strong so no one could ever try to kidnap her again. When they weren’t training, Jolie took Raven under her wing, teaching her food prepping and cooking. The quiet girl warmed up to both women rapidly.
