Chapter 75 The corgi meets the team

Finned

next few hours flew by in a blur of heavy lifting and strategic positioning inside the spatial dimension. Working in perfect sync, Jolie and Joanna hauled heavy metal fencing posts, securing them deep into the fertile soil to create sturdy, spacious pens. To save time and build structures that would last, they/utilized a few large shipping containers they had acquired, converting them into secure, weatherproof shelters for the incoming cows, sheep, and pigs. They also set up several modular chicken coops, ensuring the future poultry section had plenty of room to roost.

By the time the final feed station was locked into place, both women were covered in sweat but thoroughly satisfied with their progress. Stepping through the invisible boundary, they exited the bright agricultural paradise and crossed back into the dim, chilly reality of the first warehouse.

Jolie stretched her aching shoulders, a look of lingering awe on her face. “Wow, Boss. That was so cool. Seeing how much we can build in there without anyone bothering us… it’s a game-changer.”

“It’s only the beginning,” Joanna replied, wiping her brow. “Let’s go get the rest of the animals.”

They climbed back into the truck, the engine roaring to life as Joanna navigated the quiet streets toward their second warehouse location. Throughout the drive, Jolie kept the small, emaciated corgi cradled securely in her arms. The little dog was still visibly terrified, his small body trembling against her tactical jacket, but he remained quiet, burying his nose into the crook of her elbow for comfort.

When they pulled up to the second warehouse, Joanna left the truck idling. “Stay here with him,” she told Jolie gently. “I’ll be right back.”

Joanna walked into the dark, echoing structure alone. Rows of cages and temporary pens filled the space, alive with the sounds of shifting hooves, soft bleats, and grunting pigs. Walking down the center aisle, Joanna took a deep breath. With a sharp, practiced flick of her wrist, a wave of spatial energy rippled through the room. Instantly, every single animal held within the warehouse vanished, dissolved into the air without a sound.

Closing her eyes, Joanna focused her consciousness inward, shifting her awareness entirely into the spatial dimension. In her mind’s eye, she watched the transition happen in real-time. The cows, sheep, and pigs materialized safely inside the sturdy shipping-container shelters and secure pens they had just built. The chickens fluttered into their coops, immediately pecking at the fresh feed. Seeing all the animals settling peacefully into their new, pristine environment, Joanna couldn’t help but smile.

Opening her eyes to the now completely empty warehouse, she quickly locked up the heavy doors. She walked back to the truck, climbed into the driver’s seat, and shifted into gear. With their massive haul successfully secured, they drove back home to the apartment, ready to plan their next move.

The heavy door to the bottom apartment clicked open, and the warmth of a home-cooked meal immediately washed over Joanna and Jolie. Upstairs, Uncle Nathan was quietly keeping watch in the other apartment, taking care of Julian, who was still unconscious and recovering. Downstairs, the atmosphere was lively and bursting with energy. Jake, Raven, Rachel, and Allen were gathered in the kitchen, completely absorbed in cooking dinner. Loud bursts of laughter echoed off the walls as they jokingly bickered over who was butchering the recipe.

“Look who’s back,” Jake called out, wiping his hands on a dishtowel.

The group looked up, their smiles widening until they noticed the small, trembling ball of orange-and- white fur cradled in Jolie’s arms.

Chapter 75 The corgi meets the team

Finished

“Everyone, meet the newest member of the household,” Joanna said, stepping aside to let them get a better ok at the pup. “I found him abandoned up on the mountain during that terrible storm when I was out before.”

The team immediately abandoned the stove, crowding around with soft murmurs. Rachel cooed, her eyes melting at the sight of the oversized ears, while Raven cautiously extended a hand for the pup to sniff. Despite his initial trembling, the little corgi didn’t bark this time. The scent of roasted chicken/from the kitchen seemed to override his fear, his nose twitching frantically.

Soon, everyone piled around the large dining table, digging into a massive spread of dinner The meal quickly turned into a tag-team effort to win over the terrified pup. Plates were passed, and finy, unseasoned bits of chicken were meticulously torn off. Each team member took a turn sliding a piece onto the floor or offering it on a flat palm. The corgi, realizing he had stumbled into a culinary paradise, grew braver with every bite, darting out from under Jolie’s chair to snatch the food before retreating to chew.

With the dog sufficiently fed, the team’s focus shifted to a much more pressing matter: what to call him.

“Alright, a legendary beast needs a legendary name,” Jake announced, leaning back. “We call him… Thor, God of Thunder. Look at those stubby legs. He’s built like a hammer.”

“He weighs ten pounds and is terrified of his own shadow, Jake,” Allen shot back with a dry, sarcastic deadpan. “If he brings down lightning, it’ll be because he peed on an electrical outlet out of fear.”

“How about Sir Fluffington?” Rachel suggested, clapping her hands. “Or Barnaby!”

“This isn’t a Victorian tea party, Rachel,” Allen countered, not missing a beat. “We are a tactical unit, not a retirement home for distinguished stuffed animals.”

“What about Cheeto?” Raven chimed in, pointing a fork at the dog’s bright orange coat. “Or Nugget?”

“Great, let’s name our guard dog after a visual description of a snack food,” Allen sighed, shaking his head. “Why don’t we just name him Cholesterol and call it a day?”

Joanna sat at the head of the table, a hand propping up her chin as she watched the chaos unfold. She felt a mix of utter exasperation and deep amusement. These were, without a doubt, the silliest and most ridiculous names she had ever heard in her life. Yet, seeing her combat-hardened team argue so passionately over a tiny, emaciated dog brought a warm, unexpected sense of peace to her chest.

“Come on, Allen, let’s hear your brilliant idea then,” Jolie challenged, gently stroking the corgi’s ears as he finally let his guard down enough to rest his chin on her bool.
