Chapter 79 Recommend you get out of town immediately
Finished
Taking a deep, silent breath, she forced the panic down and calmed herself. She was no longer that helpless victim who had perished in the dark. She was a force of nature on her own now, armed with the knowledge of the future and millions of dollars in preparation.
“Greg, listen to me,” Joanna commanded, her voice turning icy and resolute. “You need to ghost right now. Erase your digital trail and abandon your office telling no one. Have you seen the news recently about the new virus?”
“Yes,” Greg replied quietly. “It’s all over the networks.”
“I have some incredibly strong intelligence on the situation,” Joanna said. “It’s much worse than they are letting on. I highly recommend you get out of town immediately and head inland. I’m texting you the coordinates to a town called Evercrest right now.”
She quickly tapped her screen, sending the encrypted geographic data over. On the other end of the line, Greg fell silent. He knew Joanna had been quietly and aggressively spending her millions on massive stockpiles of survival supplies over the last few weeks. The pieces were finally connecting in his analytical mind.
“Did you know?” Greg asked, his voice barely a whisper through the receiver. “Did you know about the virus the whole time?”
Joanna hesitated for a fraction of a second, staring at the walls of her fortified space. “Yes,” she whispered back quietly.
A heavy silence stretched across the line, but Greg didn’t panic or question her sanity. Instead, a wave of quiet understanding seemed to settle over him. He finally realized why she had been acting like a woman possessed. “I have an aunt who lives in Evercrest,” Greg said, his tone turning practical. “We can stay with her. My wife and my son will go with me.”
“Good. Before you leave town, buy up every weapon you can find, and grab as much food and medicine as your vehicle can carry,” Joanna advised him grimly.
In her mind, she officially washed her hands of Gwen and Alice. They were Elliot’s problems now. Good luck surviving the apocalypse, she thought bitterly, completely cutting any lingering attachment to them.
“When will you be there, Joanna?” Greg asked.
“I have things to secure here first. I’ll look for you in Evercrest in a few months,” Joanna replied, her eyes tracking her team as they finalized their preparations. “Until then, pack up everything you can, and to be safe from Elliot, tell no one. Stay safe, Greg.”
“You too,” he murmured, and the line went dead.
She slipped the phone back into her pocket, her expression completely transformed into one of stark, calculated survival. The shadow of Nightshade Base was lengthening, but she was ready. She turned back to the room, looking at her loyal team. They had a world to conquer, and it was just starting.
Joanna slipped her phone back into her pocket and turned to her group, who were standing by the door, finalized and ready to leave.

“Jake, you’re with me,” Joanna commanded, her voice cutting through the remaining tension. “Everyone else, listen up. Keep your eyes open on the streets. If you see anyone looking sick, feverish, or acting
ange, text the group immediately. We need to watch the situation in real time.”
A chorus of serious nods went around the room. With the final plan set, the team dispersed into the night while Joanna and Jake headed out to the heavy van idling in the driveway.
Jake took the driver’s seat, his large hands gripping the steering wheel as he navigated the darkening streets toward the first restaurant. The city felt unnaturally quiet, the calm before an impending storm.
“How you holding up, Boss?” Jake asked, breaking the silence. His voice was gruff, as it always was, but he was fiercely protective by nature, always looking out for the safety of those around him.
Joanna looked across the cabin at him and smiled softly. In her past dream timeline, she had been naive easily broken, and constantly afraid. But looking at the reflection of her own eyes in the side mirror, she knew she was not the same helpless woman from those haunting memories. “I’m ready, Jake,” she said quietly. “Better than I’ve ever been.”
He grunted in approval, nodding slowly. “Good. Because whatever is coming, we’re locking it down.”
For the next few hours, their operation moved with the precision of a well-oiled machine. They developed silent, highly efficient rhythm at every stop. Jake would pull up to the loading zones of the catering halls and restaurants, use his massive frame to carry the heavy aluminum trays and thermal containers out to the vehicle, and load them into the back. Hidden from public view in the darkened rear of the van, Joanna would immediately touch the steaming containers, sending them instantly into her pocket dimension where they would stay boiling hot forever.
They hit fifteen different restaurants back-to-back, securing the massive hoards of lasagna, pulled pork, fried chicken, teriyaki, and breakfast burritos Jolie had tracked down. By the time the final tray of garlic bread vanished into her space, Joanna’s stomach let out a sharp, audible growl.
