Chapter 99 Escort the survivors

The convoy organized quickly in the dim loading alley. RJ, Jake, and Joanna climbed into the transport van alongside the ten rescued customers. Meanwhile, Jolie, Uncle Nate, Raven, and Allen piled into the utility truck with Julian sliding into the driver’s seat.

Joanna tapped her communication earpiece, her voice ringing clearly across the local frequency. “Julian, stay on the side streets to avoid the major blockades. If any zombies get in your path, don’t slow down. Run them right over.”

With a roar of their engines, the two vehicles surged out of the alley. Jake took the wheel of the van, navigating the dark intersections with practiced ease while Joanna sat in the passenger seat, keeping a vigilant watch. In the back, RJ spoke quietly and reassuringly to the survivors, her calm demeanor successfully keeping their rising panic at bay.

The roar of the engines inevitably drew attention. Whenever a stray zombie stumbled in front of the truck, Julian kept his foot firmly on the gas, slamming through the decaying bodies with a series of heavy, sickening thuds. Joanna watched the road ahead, subtly sliding her hand out of the open passenger window. Harnessing the invisible reach of her storage space ability, she effortlessly vacuumed up the dislodged opa cores from the fallen undead. The tiny marbles materialized directly into her pouch without anyone noticing.

The vehicles finally screeched to a halt a few thousand feet away from the police station, the flashing emergency lights of the precinct cutting through the distant haze.

“Everyone out,” Joanna ordered sharply.

Stepping onto the asphalt, she spoke into the team comms to distribute assignments. “RJ, Jolie, you’re with me. We are going to escort the survivors directly to the station barricade. The rest of you, hold the perimeter and take care of the incoming dead.”

Sure enough, the sound of their late-night drive had attracted a small, aggressive cluster of the infected. The shuffling figures were already closing in from the surrounding alleys. Joanna brought up the rear to protect the civilians from behind, while Rachel and Jolie took the point, leading the terrified group toward the safety of the station.

Ryan reached into his pocket and frantically pulled out a thick wad of cash. “I have money, Joanna! Thousands of dollars, right here. Take it all, just turn the vehicles around!”

“No,” Joanna said, her voice flat and dismissive. She didn’t even look at the cash. In a world tearing itself apart at the seams, paper currency was completely worthless.

Realizing his wealth meant nothing, Ryan stuffed the bills back into his pocket, his face twisting with absolute desperation. “I’m not dead weight, Joanna. I’m a savvy businessman. I know how to run large-scale operations, manage massive inventory, and handle logistics under pressure. If you help me save my family, I will work for you. I will give you everything I have left.”

Joanna’s expression remained utterly cold. Ryan still had no idea that she had already swept his entire warehouse bone-clean into her storage space. He thought he was bartering with his future business acumen, completely unaware that his life savings in retail inventory were already sitting in her pocket dimension.

She stared at Ryan, her mind racing. Eventually, her team would need to establish their permanent base of operations in Evercrest. While her core group was incredibly strong, a fully functional stronghold couldn’t

total loss.

“Alright,” Joanna said quietly. “But you need to follow my rules. Do you have a good off-road vehicle?”

“Of course,” Ryan said instantly, a spark of hope in his eyes. “My company actually designed two brand-new camper prototypes that I have parked at my house right now. They’re heavily modified and absolutely perfect for the wilderness.”

“Good,” Joanna replied. “Pack your family up and come with us. We’ll talk more on the drive to your place.”
