Chapter 138 Comfort Me
Natalie’s POV
The weight of the emerald at my throat felt heavier now.
I looked out the floor–to–ceiling window of the lodge, trying to catch my breath.
I was a Stone.
A daughter of the most powerful Nomadic Pack.
For twenty years, I had walked through life as a shadow, believing I was a placeholder for a family that didn’t want me.
To find out I was actually the heart they had been mourning… it should have been overwhelming.
But I just felt numb.

The moon goddess must be playing a cruel joke with my life… after I had finally found my biological parents, another crisis loomed.
There’s always something wrong.
I turned back to him and gave a small nod. “That’s fine,” I said, my voice calmer than even I expected.
A faint pang of longing bloomed in my chest. “Doesn’t this mean I can’t even visit Mrs. Stone… in the hospital?”
“You’re still calling her Mrs. Stone?” Baron asked, his voice a little amused.
He stepped closer, his scent; oak, leather, and a hint of the tobacco he’d just put out surrounding me like a cloak. “She’s your mother, Natalie.”
Seeing that I wasn’t upset or on the verge of a breakdown, I saw the tension in his shoulders ease just a little.
I smiled faintly, tracing the line of his jaw with my eyes. “I can’t call her that yet. I’ll need time. Twenty years of being an orphan doesn’t vanish in a single morning.” I shifted the subject, noticing the way his gaze darkened whenever he looked toward the door.
“Didn’t you say there were two things? What’s the other one?”
Baron’s eyes chilled instantly.
He didn’t answer immediately, his jaw tightening.
I picked up on it instantly.
I could feel his uneasiness through the bond and the voice in my head seemed to shiver at the feeling.
“Does it have to do with Jensen?” I asked.
Baron’s gaze shifted toward me, and for a second, he looked full of wounded grievance.
He looked as if I had just said something that personally wronged his soul.

I stood my ground, crossing my arms.

“Baron! Talk! You realize, don’t you, that I’ll be bringing up Jensen’s name more and more in front of you from now on?”
My matter–of–fact tone seemed to unsettle him even more.
It was as if he wanted to keep me in a bubble where no other man could even cast a shadow.
He let out a sharp exhale and pulled me into his arms, burying his face in the crook of my neck, right over the mark.
His voice was muffled against my skin, vibrating through my bones. “I know. You want revenge yourself; you’ll have to bring him up, maybe even face him again. But every time I imagine you having to deal with him, every time I think of his eyes on you… I can’t stand it,” he muttered.
“The thought of him looking at you… Raze wants to tear the world apart.”
I felt a wave of helplessness toward this big golden retriever of a man.
I couldn’t erase the five years I had spent with Jensen.
Or the way I had once loved him; blindly, foolishly.
But I had cut him off.
Completely.
I had watched my own skin burn because of his negligence.
I could never forgive him, and I certainly didn’t want him.
“So what do you want?” I asked softly, my fingers tangling in the hair at the nape of his neck.
Baron knew he was being unreasonable… I could feel the sheepishness through our bond.
“Maybe you could kiss me?”
I couldn’t help it.
A soft laugh escaped me.
1 cupped his face gently, forcing him to look at me.
This terrifying man who I once feared was begging for a kiss.
I rose on tiptoe, pulling his head down, and pressed a tender, lingering kiss to his lips.
“Alpha Baron, don’t be insecure,” I whispered against his mouth, my eyes locking onto his glowing amber ones. “I’m your mate, We’re bonded, I can feel you and you can feel me.” I said pointing between us.
“I can’t promise I already love you completely but I can promise my body belongs only to you. And sooner or later, my heart probably will too.” I added sincerely.
Baron’s eyes turned red at the edges, as he wrapped me tightly in his strong arms, his grip so fierce it nearly took my breath away.

“You said it,” he rasped, his voice thick with a vow. “I’m taking it seriously. You’re mine, Natalie. Forever.”
“Alright,” I replied, the softness of my voice finally settling him.

i stepped back just an inch, though I didn’t leave the circle of his arms. “So what’s the second thing? What has Jensen done now?”
Baron finally answered, his voice turning cold in an instant.
“Jensen found out you’re still alive due to the announcement and the whole bank account issue. Now, he is going crazy, buying information about you on the black market, trying to find any lead on where you went after the fire. But the black market is my territory and he’s trying to dig in my yard. I need to go back there to reinforce the lines.”
Hearing how unhinged Jensen had become, I couldn’t help but find it ironic.
A bitter smile touched my lips.
“For men, is it always that what they can’t have is the most precious?” I mused.
“When I was with him, he was so busy chasing Sharon that I was a ghost. He couldn’t have her, so she became his ‘first love‘ and his obsession. Now that he’s mated to Sharon and I’m gone, suddenly I’ve turned into his dream? It’s pathetic.”
My words made Baron declare instantly, his chest puffing out with pride.
“That doesn’t include me! I’ve never had a first love. I’ve never looked at another woman the way I look at you. You’re the only one for me.”
I couldn’t help but smile at that.
Baron really did seize every chance to prove his loyalty, as if he were constantly competing with a ghost he had already defeated.
But the truth was, I was starting to like that feeling.
