Chapter 155 The Mate’s Shield

Baron’s POV

Through the bond, I could feel her embarrassment like a wave of heat.

I saw her eyes widen in the mirror, her cheeks flushing a deep, delicious crimson.

She looked like she wanted to melt into the velvet of the chair.

What on earth am I saying? Why would those kinds of words even come out of my mouth And what did I come here for again?

She rambled through the bond, obviously not knowing that I could hear her.

I swallowed the laugh that threatened to spill over.

Seeing her like this, flustered and radiating a heat for me, acted like a sedative to my wolf.

I was caught off guard by her slip, but the sight of her frustration with herself was more intoxicating than any victory on a battlefield.

I heard you saw something on the news, she cut in quickly, her voice a bit too high. The kids said you were upset. I came to check on you, Baron. I didn’t mean toI wasn’t suggesting

The blow dryer paused in my hand.

I looked down at her.

The urge to sprint to the Nightfang borders and tear Jensen’s throat out was smoothed away by the simple fact that she had run to me.

Worried about me?I asked, my voice dropping into a low register.

I leaned down slightly, my face an inch away from hers.

He’s not seriously thinking of taking me right here, is he?I felt the thought flash across her

mind.

She doesn’t know how to block the mate link yetcute.

And you ran here with your hair still wet?I whispered, continuing the work. Do you have any idea what that does to a man’s restraint, Natalie? Seeing you like this?

Baron, listen, she said, her voice trying to sound normal, though she didn’t look at me in the mirror.

I saw the newsI saw what Jensen said at the airport. I’ll deal with him right awayI won’t let him run his mouth like that. If you’re still angry, you can always put a sack over his head tonight and beat him senseless. I won’t stop you. Justdon’t destroy yourself for him.”

I felt a ghost of a smile tugging at the corners of my mouth.

My fierce, brilliant Luna was offering me the chance to pummel her exfiancé as a consolation prize.

Natalie moved to get up, likely wanting to escape the suffocating tension of the room, but I pressed a hand firmly on her shoulder.

A jolt of electricity passed through me and with her expression, she felt it too.

Don’t move.I commanded, though the growl was gone. Your hair’s not dry yet. From now on, no matter what happens you dry your hair first. No man is allowed to see you in this

state.

I felt her heart tremble through the bond, a soft, vibrating resonance that matched my own.

This manI heard her thoughts, a mix of helplessness and dawning affection.

She shook her head with a soft, melodic laugh, the corners of her lips curving up in a way that made me want to stop the world right there.

Alright,she murmured. I’ll stay.

For those few minutes, I focused on the weight of her hair, the scent of her skin, and the way she leaned into my touch.

When the last of the dampness was gone, I set the dryer aside.

I stood behind her for a moment longer than necessary, my hands resting on the back of the chair.

Do whatever you want,I said, my voice steady. Don’t worry about me, Natalie. I’ll make sure you’re safe.”

Natalie’s eyes grew damp with unshed tears.

She stood up and turned to face me.

Mm. Then I’ll go take care of things online. It’s time I reminded Jensen that the Keeper doesn’t belong to anyone.”

That’s my girl.”

I reluctantly let her go, my fingers trailing along her arm as she stepped away.

Natalie turned at the door, rising on tiptoe to kiss me lightly on the lips.

If something bothers you, don’t bottle it up,she whispered against my mouth, her gaze searching mine with an intensity that made Raze go still. If something is bothering you, say it. We’re in this together now.

I looked at her, and for a split second, the question was on the tip of my tongue.

Why didn’t you tell me about your wolf?

But as I looked at the fragile peace in her eyes, I felt a heavy, bittersweet sadness settle in my chest.

If she hadn’t told me, it was because she wasn’t ready. If I forced it out of her now, I might break the very trust I was trying to build.

I decided to keep the secret buried, to let her find her own voice when the time was right.

Alright,I promised, my voice thick with the weight of what I wasn’t saying.

Only then did she leave the gym. I watched her go, the sway of her robe the last thing I saw before the door clicked shut.

Natalie’s POV

I could still feel the warmth of Baron’s hands on my shoulders even after I stepped out of the

gym.
