I had never understood how Sharon – the fragile woman I had sacrificed my soul to protect could have been outmaneuvered so thoroughly by Natalie today.

Now, I finally realized the truth.

Sharon had tried to scheme against Natalie, to drag her through the mud of a public sex scandal, only to be outplayed.

I felt like my face had been dragged across the pavement in front of the entire South.

And the one who had humiliated me like this was my mate – Sharon.

Sharon saw the look in my eyes.

I could smell the sharp, metallic scent of her fear as she quickly shook her head, clutching my jacket around her shoulders.

Her eyes filled with tears, her expression shifting into that practiced look of suppressed grievance that had once worked on me so well.

I let out a cold, self–mocking laugh.

“Natalie has no dealings with Dr. Johnson. Why would he target her?”

“On the other hand… Sharon… he’s your doctor, isn’t he? You’ve been close for years. When he learned Natalie’s return might threaten your position…”

I let the silence stretch.

“Wouldn’t it make perfect sense for him to act on your behalf?”

“No, Jensen, it’s not me! Do you really see me as such a vicious woman? After everything I’ve suffered?” Sharon burst into frantic. ugly sobs, her body racking with tremors.

I was tired of the lies.

“Hand her over to Enforcement,” I said flatly, turning my back on her. “Let the Pack Enforcement and the authorities handle the rest. I’m done.”

I rose to leave, my steps heavy.

The reporters tried to block my path but the aura rolling off me made them recoít.

They stepped aside without a word.

Seeing me walk away without even offering her a hand, Sharon scrambled to her feet, tripping over the hem of my coat as she hurried after me.

“Jensen! Wait! You can’t leave me here like this!”

I frowned, my jaw tightening, but I didn’t stop her.

I didn’t have the strength to push her away, nor the heart to look at her.

That was when the beggar suddenly spoke.

“Wait, Alpha Jensen… you hit me, and that’s just it? You think you can just walk out?”

My brows knitted tighter.

I hated to even remind myself of the fact that my mate had been entangled with a filthy, drug–addled beggar.

I never imagined the beggar would have the audacity to call out to me after I’d nearly beaten him to death.

I stopped and turned.

“If you’d kept quiet, I might have forgotten you existed,” I hissed. “You’re just a beggar. Do you have a death wish?”

The beggar clutched his broken ribs, leaning against a velvet chair for support.

“I was set up… I was sleeping under the bridge when someone brought me here. They drugged me. They promised me a heaven i didn’t ask for. Then you beat me like this. Don’t I deserve an explanation? Don’t I deserve justice?”

“An explanation? Alpha Jensen sparing your life is explanation enough for a parasite like you,” Hansel scoffed, stepping forward to silence him.

But the beggar suddenly pointed a trembling finger at Sharon.

“She’s the one who told me to come! She’s the one who promised it!”

Sharon exploded. “You’re lying! You’re a delusional addict! I don’t even know who you are!”
