Chapter 229 Who’s Afraid Of Two Kids

Natalie’s POV

The hospital hallway was a blur of white and cold shadows as I strode toward the exit.

My wolf was pacing, howling in fear of losing her pups.

Sharon’s confusion had been too real.

Right now, all I cared about was the children’s whereabouts.

The moment the heavy glass doors of the lobby swung open, I pulled out my phone and dialed Barom.

Any leads on the kids?I asked, my voice cracking despite my efforts to remain calm.

Not yet,Baron’s voice came through.

But don’t worry, Natalie. Even if I have to turn this pack upside down and shake the truth out of everyone, I’ll find them. No one Cakes what is mine and lives to tell the tale.

His tone betrayed his own anxiety.

He was trying to steady me, but I could hear the way his breath caught.

Forget about mejust focus on finding them,I said quickly, stepping into the car Chris held open for me.

Sharon doesn’t know anything. I pushed her to the brink, and she didn’t even know the inspector, Terry. Something about this doesn’t add up, Baron. The trail leading to the Summers family was too clean, too easy to follow. If we can rule Sharon out, then the problem may very well be on your sideyour past, your enemies. No matter what, you have to make sure the kids are safe. They don’t understand this world yet.

I pictured their small faces, perhaps enduring unspeakable suffering or shivering in the dark, and a sob caught in my throat.

Baron’s voice hardened, don’t worry; I’ll do everything it takes to bring them back. Stay with Chris. I’m moving to the neighboring packs now.

Sean’s POV

The floor of the van was cold, smelling of urine and something sharp, like gasoline.

Every time the tires hit a pothole, my teeth rattled in my head.

My hands were pulled behind my back, the rough rope biting into my wrists, and my ankles were tied so tight.

Dad

Mom

Beside me, Susie was shivering in fear.

I could smell her fear but she wasn’t crying.

twas proud of her for that.

Dad always said that in a bunt, the one who stays quiet is the one who survives.

I kept my eyes squeezed shut for a second, trying to listen past the ioud⚫

thrumthrum of the engine.

The men in the front were talking.

They thought we were still asleep.

Stay off the main roads, the one with the sunglasses was saying.

His vo ce was scratchy.

Baron’s power is terrifyingany place with surveillance might give him a trai!.

They’re just two brats, the driver scoffed.

hated his voice.

Our plates are clean. Even if the cameras catch us, it won’t matter.

Being cautious never hurts, the other man snapped back. Do you even understand who those kids belong to?the man with Sunglasses hissed.

The boss has spent years trying to get leverage over Baron. Now we finally have it.

felt a spark of heat in my chest.

Neakness?

Dad wasn’t weak, and neither were we.

nudged Susie with my foot.

It was a tiny movement, just enough to let her know I was awake.

She didn’t answer, but I felt her shift.

We had played escape the Hunter a hundred times back with Uncle Chris.

I knew what to do.

I rolled onto my side, pressing my back against hers.

My fingers started to grope for the knots on her wrists.

I had to be careful.

If the van stopped or if they looked back, we were in trouble.

And we’ve got Terry to thank, the driver continued, laughing.

He loosened a couple screws, and the whole thing Cane Cras

One of them growled.

Doesn’t matter. Get him out. If Barqn gets his hands on him, we’re all finished.

focused all my energy on the rope.

My wc lf was small but present.

felt a surge of strength in my fingertips.

The knot was stubborn, coated in dirt, but I felt it give.

A little bit.

Then a lot.

Susie’s hands came free.

She didn’t make a sound.

She was so fastfaster than me.

She reached down and undid the ropes on her feet, then turned around and started working on mine.

Her small fingers moved like lightning.

Head for the Sun Pack!Jace ordered as the van swerved.
