Chapter 233 Kids Choose Fun Over Drama
Natalie’s POV
The morning sun filtered through the heavy curtains of the villa.
When I reached out, my fingers brushed against the linens, searching for a warmth that wasn’t there.
The spot beside me was empty… not just empty, but ice–cold.
Baron had been gone for a long time.
Perhaps he hadn’t slept at all.

With something this catastrophic happening to the children, I knew he wouldn’t rest until the world was made right again.
My heart ached for him. I knew the weight of that responsibility, the way it gnawed at your soul when you felt you had failed your pack.
‘He’s carrying the weight of the world again,‘ a voice hummed in the back of my mind. And you’re carrying the weight of a secret. I froze, my hand still resting on the cold pillow.
Nyx was stirring.
‘When are you going to tell him, Natalie?‘ Nyx’s voice was cool and persistent. ‘He’s an Alpha. He senses your scent. You’re lying to your mate.‘
“When everything is settled,” I whispered to the empty room. “When the children are safe, when Sharon is dealt with, and when we are back in the North. Not now.”
‘It shouldn’t be too long,‘ Nyx warned, then retreated into the silence of my subconscious.
I shook off the chill and got out of bed.
I washed up, the cold water helping to clear the lingering fog of yesterday’s terror.
I called Chris and had him prepare a nutritious, high–energy meal for Baron.
Even if he wouldn’t sleep, he had to maintain his strength.
Once that was handled, I went to check on the kids.
Today was the opening day of the kindergarten we had chosen for them.
I had spent half the night worrying that they would be too traumatized to leave the villa, that they would cling to me, terrified of the outside world after their ordeal in the van.
To my absolute surprise, the moment I walked into their room and mentioned preschool, they lit up with excitement.
“Can we wear our new backpacks?” Susie chirped, bouncing on the bed as if she hadn’t been kidnapped by masked men less than twelve hours ago.

Sean was already pulling on his shoes, his face serious but his eyes bright. “We need to go, Mommy. We have to learn things”
I stared at them, my heart swelling with a mixture of relief and awe.
Shifter children truly were made of different mettle.
After making absolutely sure they weren’t just masking their fear, I signaled–Chris.
It was time.
The drive to the preschool was quiet.
The director was already waiting at the gate.

She personally welcomed us, her eyes darting to the guards Chris had stationed around the perimeter.
It was the kids‘ first time being around so many other children.
The fear I had anticipated never materialized.
The moment they saw the playground and the other pups running around, they were thrilled.
They didn’t even look back with longing; they simply waved their small hands, calling out “Bye, Mommy!” as they disappeared into a sea of colorful building blocks and laughter.
Seeing them so happy, so untroubled by the darkness of adults, finally put my mind at ease.
“Luna, please, don’t worry,” the director assured me quickly, recognizing the lingering tension in my shoulders. “The security is top–notch, and the children will be just fine here with us. They’re already making friends.”
I nodded, staying for a while longer to watch through the glass
Once I was certain they were fully immersed in play, I turned away.
Chris led me back to the car.
We were halfway back to the villa when my phone buzzed. It was a message from Renee at the studio.
“Natalie, Jensen just sent some files to our studio’s email. I think he’s trying to bypass your personal blocks. Do you want to take a look? It looks… personal.”
I felt a cold prickle of apprehension.
“Jensen?” I muttered.
“Yes,” Renee replied via text, followed by an exasperated sigh emoji.
She forwarded the documents to my phone.
The moment I opened the attachments, the air in the car seemed to turn to ice.
My face darkened, my hands clenching into fists so tight my nails bit into my palms.
Jensen had actually dug up our private chat logs from the five years we were together.

He had meticulously documented out history, every digital footprint of our relationship, and sent them back to me like a weapon.
As I scrolled, my anger rose, hot and sharp in my chest.
How shameless could he possibly be?
“Did he say anything else?” I asked.
“He told the office manager that you should reach out to him directly,” Renee said, her tone dripping with disgust. “He said you still have his number and that some things are better discussed between the two people involved.‘ Natalie, what is this? Is he trying to threaten you with your own past? How did I never notice before what a wretched, shameless man he is?”
“I only just realized it myself,” I said, my voice sounding hollow even to my own ears.
I told Chris to pull over.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe properly.
He didn’t ask questions; he simply steered the car to the curb and waited, his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror.
I scrolled through the logs again.
Reading those words felt like looking back at a ghost.
I saw the old Natalie – the girl who had caged herself in for the sake of a love that was never returned.
I saw myself apologizing for being too busy with work.
Thanking him repeatedly for saving me.
Reinforcing the debt he later used as a leash around my throat.
Every line I’d written back then had been real.
And now, he was using that vulnerability as leverage.
What did that say about him?
It meant Jensen no longer cared to preserve any of the good that had once existed between us.
He was willing to strip–mine our memories if it meant he could keep his hold on me.
I read through the entire record, It wasn’t hard to understand his motive.
He wanted to use these logs to prove that my designs weren’t professional work, but gifts of love.
The thought made me laugh.
I truly wanted nothing more to do with him.
I wanted to erase every trace of the girl who had written those messages.

If he thought he could use my past love to chain me to his present, he was more delusional than I thought..
Nyx growled in my chest
I didn’t hesitate.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Baron.
Baron answered on the second ring, his voice low and focused. “Natalie? Is everything okay with the kids?”
“The kids are fine, Baron,” I said, my voice steadying as I looked out the window at the skyline.
“But Baron, I need you to find a lawyer to deal with Jensen for me.”
