The morning sun filtered through the heavy curtains of the villa.

When I reached out, my fingers brushed against the linens, searching for a warmth that wasn’t there.

I shook off the chill and got out of bed.

I washed up, the cold water helping to clear the lingering fog of yesterday’s terror.

I called Chris and had him prepare a nutritious, high–energy meal for Baron.

Even if he wouldn’t sleep, he had to maintain his strength.

Once that was handled, I went to check on the kids.

Today was the opening day of the kindergarten we had chosen for them.

“Jensen?” I muttered.

She forwarded the documents to my phone.

The moment I opened the attachments, the air in the car seemed to turn to ice.
