Chapter 106

The words sent a chill down my spine–not the good kind.

I stepped away from him and walked briskly toward the exit, aware of the jealous glares from several girls around the cafetería.

I had barely made it to the hallway when I felt someone grab my arm. Turning, I found Lisa glaring at me.

“Who do you think you are?” Lisa hissed. “You think you’re too good for everyone, including the hot new guy?”

I calmly removed her hand from my arm. “This doesn’t concern you.”

“You’re such a stuck–up bitch,” Lisa spat, lunging forward to shove me.

Years of instinct kicked in. I sidestepped the attack and caught Lisa’s wrist, twisting it just enough to force the girl to her knees. She yelped in pain, her wrist bent at an awkward angle.

“My wrist! You broke my wrist!” Lisa wailed dramatically.

“It’s just dislocated,” I corrected coolly, releasing my grip. “You’ll be fine.”

A crowd had gathered around us, drawn by Lisa’s cries. Among them, Kate appeared with her usual fake concern

“What’s going on here?” Kate demanded, rushing to Lisa’s side. “Evelyn, what have you done?”

*She attacked me, and I defended myself,” I stated flatly. “Come on, Lisa. Let’s go to the student affairs office. They’ll need to call your

parents and file a report with campus security.”

“What? No!” Lisa protested, cradling her wrist.

My tone left no room for argument. “Either that, or the hospital. Your choice.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you,” Lisa snapped. “You’re not normal. Everyone knows it.”

Kate helped Lisa to her feet. “I’ll take her to student affairs. You’ve done enough damage, Evelyn.”

“Actually, I’ll be accompanying both of you,” I insisted, my voice calm but firm. “Since I’m the one being accused of assault, I have the

right to be present when the report is filed.”

In the student affairs office, Dean Fernandez listened to both sides of the story with practiced patience. Lisa claimed I had attacked her unprovoked, while I maintained I had merely defended myself against her aggression.

“This is a serious accusation, Dean Fernandez said gravely. “We’ll need to speak with any witnesses. Samuel, I understand you were present during the initial interaction in the cafeteria?”

Samuel, who had been called in as a potential witness, stepped into the office with a composed demeanor.

“I was there, yes,” he confirmed, his accent adding a melodic quality to his words. “I must say, Miss Gray was nothing but polite, despite clearly wanting to be left alone. She helped me feel welcome on my first day, actually.”

His eyes met mine, a silent message passing between us that made my stomach knot. He was lying–1 had been anything but welcoming- but why would he defend me?

“The incident in the hallway, though,” Samuel continued, “I only caught the end of it. But it seemed to me that Miss Gray was defending herself.” He looked at Lisa with exaggerated concern. “Though perhaps with more force than necessary? Poor girl seems quite hurt.”

Lucy burst into the office unannounced. “Dean Fernandez, Lisa is lying! She went after Evelyn because she was jealous that Samuel was talking to her.”

Lisa’s face contorted with rage. “Shut up, Lucy! You’re supposed to be on my side!”

“I’m not going to get in trouble because you can’t handle rejection,” Lucy snapped back.
