Chapter 105

After settling Grandpa into the nursing home, I threw myself into rebuilding my emotional strength during the remainder of my break. The start of the new semester at university marked another step in my journey. The confrontation with my father and mother had drained me, but had also awakened something dormant within me.
As I settled into my seat in the class, I took a deep breath. ‘New semester, new mindset,‘ I reminded myself.
“Good morning, everyone,” Professor Robert’s authoritative voice cut through the chatter. “I hope you all had a restful break because this semester is going to challenge you in ways you haven’t experienced before.”
The professor adjusted his wire–rimmed glasses. “Before we dive into today’s lecture, I’d like to introduce a new addition to our class. We have an exchange student joining us from Eastern Europe. Samuel, welcome.”
A tall figure came into the classroom. With sharp cheekbones, dark blonde hair, and piercing green eyes, he commanded attention immediately. I noticed the girls in class straightening in their seats, whispering among themselves.
“Damn, he’s hot,” a girl whispered two rows before me.
“Do you think he’s single?” another responded.
I ignored the whispers, but something about the new student made my skin prickle with unease. As Professor Robert introduced Samuel’s
academic background, I felt the weight of someone’s gaze on me. I glanced up to find Samuel staring directly at me, a slight smile playing
on his lips. The intensity of his gaze sent a warning signal through my body.
*Samuel, there’s an empty seat behind Ms. Gray. You can take that for today,” Professor Robert directed.
I stiffened as Samuel made his way toward me. Something about his movement seemed too deliberate, too predatory.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Samuel. What’s your name?” he whispered as he took his seat behind me,
I merely nodded in acknowledgment, keeping my eyes fixed on the professor, I had no interest in engaging with the new student, especially when every fiber of my being screamed danger.
“What’s your name?” Samuel persisted, leaning closer. The proximity made my shoulders tense.
“Ms. Gray, I’d appreciate it if you saved the introductions for after class,” Professor Robert called out, giving us a pointed look.
Lily leaned over from the adjacent desk. “Why are you being so cold to the new guy?” she whispered. “He’s gorgeous, and he seems
interested in you.”

I get a bad feeling about him,” I whispered back. “You should stay away from him too.”
Lily’s eyes widened. “But-
“Trust me on this, Lily, I insisted, my voice dropping even lower. “I don’t think he’s a good person.”
Lily looked disappointed but nodded, respecting my judgment.

The university cafeteria buzzed with activity during lunch hour. Lily and I had secured a small table near the window, away from the main
crowd. I was picking at my salad when a commotion near the entrance caught Lily’s attention.
“Evelyn, look,” Lily nodded toward the doorway. “Samuel just walked in, and half the girls in here are practically falling over themselves to
sit with him.”
I didn’t bother looking up. “I’m not interested in the freshman fan club, Lily.”
“But you have to admit, he’s-”
Lily’s words died in her throat as Samuel navigated through the crowd of admiring girls and headed straight for our table. Before I could
object, he slid into the seat directly across from me.
“Mind if I join you?” Samuel asked, though he was already settled.
I didn’t look up from my salad. “The table was empty for a reason.”
Samuel chuckled, undeterred by my coldness. “I like your honesty. It’s refreshing.”
A girl with long blonde hair quickly took the seat next to Samuel, flashing him a bright smile. “Hi, I’m Melissa. You’re the new exchange student, right? I’d be happy to show you around campus sometime.”
Samuel barely acknowledged her, keeping his eyes fixed on me. “Perhaps another time.”
From two tables over, Lucy’s sharp voice carried. “I don’t understand why he’s wasting his time with her. She doesn’t even have the
decency to look at him when he’s talking.”
The comment was clearly meant for me to hear.
I’d lost my appetite. I stood up, gathering my things. “I’m heading to the library, Lily. I’ll see you later.”
As I turned to leave, Samuel rose as well. He moved closer, his lips nearly brushing my ear as he whispered, “I think I’m falling for you at
first sight, Miss Gray.”

The words sent a chill down my spine–not the good kind.

I stepped away from him and walked briskly toward the exit, aware of the jealous glares from several girls around the cafetería.
I had barely made it to the hallway when I felt someone grab my arm. Turning, I found Lisa glaring at me.
“Who do you think you are?” Lisa hissed. “You think you’re too good for everyone, including the hot new guy?”
I calmly removed her hand from my arm. “This doesn’t concern you.”
“You’re such a stuck–up bitch,” Lisa spat, lunging forward to shove me.
Years of instinct kicked in. I sidestepped the attack and caught Lisa’s wrist, twisting it just enough to force the girl to her knees. She yelped in pain, her wrist bent at an awkward angle.
“My wrist! You broke my wrist!” Lisa wailed dramatically.
“It’s just dislocated,” I corrected coolly, releasing my grip. “You’ll be fine.”
A crowd had gathered around us, drawn by Lisa’s cries. Among them, Kate appeared with her usual fake concern
“What’s going on here?” Kate demanded, rushing to Lisa’s side. “Evelyn, what have you done?”
*She attacked me, and I defended myself,” I stated flatly. “Come on, Lisa. Let’s go to the student affairs office. They’ll need to call your
parents and file a report with campus security.”
“What? No!” Lisa protested, cradling her wrist.
My tone left no room for argument. “Either that, or the hospital. Your choice.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you,” Lisa snapped. “You’re not normal. Everyone knows it.”
Kate helped Lisa to her feet. “I’ll take her to student affairs. You’ve done enough damage, Evelyn.”
