My knuckles whitened as I gripped the steering wheel, eyes flicking to the rearview mirror every few seconds. The black sedan had been following us since we left the hospital, maintaining a careful distance–not too close, not too far. Just enough to keep us

“So, what kind of dress are you thinking of wearing tonight?” I asked, keeping my voice deliberately casual despite the tension in my jaw.

“What, your date got interrupted?‘ Edward’s tone was light, but I could hear the shift to seriousness underneath.

“The Redwoods are back.” I lowered my voice, glancing at the closed door. “They’ve been tracking Evelyn. We’re having dinner with Shawn tonight.”

I’ll have my people monitor the Redwoods‘ movements. We’ll make sure you’re covered during dinner.” Edward said firmly before hanging up.

I then pushed open the bedroom door, ready to change for dinner, but froze at the threshold.
