Chapter 49 Frank Returns Home

“Are you sure?” Naomi could hardly believe what she was hearing.

I’m sure,” Florence replied in a comforting tone

But the more Naomi thought about it, the more it didn’t add up.

Normally, when she went out of her way to greet Matthew, he barely acknowledged her. Yet today, at Hamilton Manor, he had spoken to Arabella first. Given his usual reserved nature, he wouldn’t have initiated a greeting with a stranger unless they were already acquainted.

“Mom, I’m heading out. I won’t be home for dinner, Naomi said abruptly, turning toward the

door.

Florence watched her with concern. “Where are you off to**

“I’m going to see Ruby

“Alright, but please be back at a reasonable hour

“I will.”

Florence sighed softly once Naomi was gone.

If only the Stewarts had two sons…

Then even if things didn’t work out with Matthew, there might still be someone for Naomi.

But as things stood, she would simply have to come to terms with reality…

Once outside, Naomi pulled out her phone and called Ruby.

“Naomi, are you back from Hamilton Manor?” Ruby guessed as soon as she answered.

Naomi had mentioned her visit earlier, so Ruby figured she’d be calling once she was free.

“Where are you right now?” Naomi asked, her tone unmistakably downcast.

Tm at home,” Ruby replied gently, already sensing Naomi’s mood.

Okay, I’m coming over, Naomi said before hanging up.

Ruby stared at her phone, puzzled.

Why did Naomi suddenly want to meet? What had happened?

Feeling low, Naomi got into her car and drove off, not noticing another vehicle pulling into the driveway just as she left.

Inside that car, Frank Hamilton watched Naomi’s car pass by, a slight frown forming on his face.

Didn’t Naomi see me arriving? Why is she leaving in such a hurry?

Normally, she’d come out to greet him the moment he returned. The fact that she hadn’t even noticed him was unusual. Something must be bothering her.

After getting out of the car, Frank glanced once more in the direction Naomi had gone, then shook his head and headed inside.

Moments later, his tall frame appeared in the living room.

When Florence saw her eldest son, her face immediately brightened, and she walked over to him.

“Frank, you’re back! Why didn’t you let us know?

Frank set aside his usual business demeanor and offered Florence a warm smile. “I just got in. Wanted it to be a surprise.

“By the way, I saw Naomi driving out just now,” he remarked, his eyebrow lifting slightly in question.

“Yes, she went to see Ruby,” Florence said, deciding not to mention Naomi’s upset for the time being.

He had just returned, and she didn’t want to burden him with family worries right away.

“I see,” Frank replied, not giving it further thought once he knew Naomi was with Ruby.

“Come sit down. I have some wonderful news for you,” Florence said, unable to contain her excitement.

Frank noted her happy expression and asked curiously, “What’s made you so cheerful?”

“Your sister–your biological sister–has been found!” Just speaking the words filled Florence with joy.

“Really?” Surprise flashed in Frank’s eyes, but being perceptive, he quickly connected the dots. “Was it Alfred who brought her home?”

Alfred usually visited every couple of months, but his return this time was unexpectedly early.

Frank had sensed something was different.

Seeing how quickly Frank pieced it together, Florence nodded eagerly, “Yes, it was him. I’ll introduce you once she comes downstairs”

“Of course,” Frank agreed,

“Which room is she staying in?” he asked, wanting to ensure his sister had been properly settled.

Since she was new to the home, she deserved a comfortable, welcoming space.

“You don’t need to worry about that. Do you think we’d give Arabella anything less than the best? She has the room with the finest view,” Florence replied, giving him a playful look.

Though Frank was often reserved and serious, he had always been kind to Naomi. It was good to see him showing the same care for his newly found sister.

“Her name is Arabella?” A subtle warmth appeared in Frank’s eyes, as if he found the name pleasing.

“Yes, she went by Arabella while growing up with the Macdonalds. We visited Hamilton Manor today to see your grandparents and finalized her name change. All her legal documents have been updated as well,” Florence explained briefly.

“It’s a lovely name,” Frank said. Then he recalled Naomi’s hurried departure–she’d been driving rather fast, almost as if she were upset.

After a moment’s reflection, he asked, “If I remember correctly, Naomi once mentioned wanting that room for herself, didn’t she?”

Florence was quick to clarify. “Naomi always said she liked it, but she never settled on a design or made any real plans to move. Besides, her current room is beautifully appointed. With Arabella home, it was only right to prepare a special place for her.”

Florence had always treated Naomi well. The room Naomi occupied had been carefully decorated and was, in truth, quite lovely–she was more than comfortable there.
