“The Sunspire District? Isn’t that where all the wealthy families live? How did you end up there?” Edward looked at her in surprise.
“Why so surprised? I said the edge of Sunspire District, not in Sunspire District proper,” Arabella clarified quickly, hoping to stop him from reading too much into it.
Edward was quiet for a moment. “Is your new company located around there?”
“Yes, it’s in that area. They even arranged housing for employees–sort of like corporate lodging,” Arabella added, following his lead.
“That’s what I meant. Someone like me couldn’t afford to live in an actual wealthy neighborhood,” she said, keeping up the pretense for now, if only to shield him from the rest of the Macdonald family’s curiosity.
“You had me worried for a second. I actually thought you meant you lived in Sunspire District,” Edward said, finally relaxing.
That made more sense. Even if Arabella’s new situation was better than Carter had claimed, there was no way it was that much better. After all, only the seriously wealthy lived in Sunspire District–he’d only ever heard about it, never been.
“Arabella, since you’re living near that kind of crowd, you need to be extra careful. Don’t get on anyone’s bad side–if you upset someone with real influence, it could be hard to handle,” Edward warned, a new concern entering his voice.
With the Macdonald family’s current standing, they were no match for old money and power. If Arabella crossed the wrong person, even he wouldn’t be able to help her.
“I know. I’ll be careful. Don’t worry,” Arabella replied, inwardly regretting her choice of location. She should’ve picked somewhere more remote–now she’d just given Edward another reason to worry.
Just then, Freya and Harper returned home.
A maid approached them quietly. “Mrs. Macdonald, Arabella is back. She’s upstairs in Edward’s
room.”
“What’s she doing back here?” Freya’s frown was immediate.
“She probably ran out of money and came crawling back. Maybe she’s trying to get cash out of Edward right now. Mom, you should go up there–don’t let him be fooled,” Harper said,

Hearing this, Freya’s displeasure deepened. With a stern expression, she headed toward Edward’s room.
As she reached the door, she could hear light laughter from inside. Her frown tightened.
“How cozy in here. So, you’re back–what, ran out of money for food? Come to beg from Edward?” Freya’s tone was sharp, her eyes fixed dismissively on Arabella.
She hadn’t even noticed the stranger in the room.
Ethan’s expression turned cold the moment the woman walked in and began speaking.
Arabella’s smile faded as she looked at Freya.
“Mom, that’s not what’s happening. Arabella came to visit me,” Edward said, his own smile vanishing.
“Edward, why are you still defending her? She’s not a Macdonald anymore,” Harper cut in.
“You don’t get a say here,” Edward replied coolly.
“And you be quiet too–taking an outsider’s side over your own sister. Are you even Harper’s brother?” Freya snapped, annoyed at Edward’s support of Arabella.
“Mom, Arabella is also my—”
“Enough. Are sharply.
you deaf? She is not your sister! Harper is your only sister.” Freya’s voice rose
“Alright, that’s enough. No one needs a lecture. I’m not here for money,” Arabella said, her gaze growing colder.
“Edward, don’t get worked up–it’s not good for you. I’ll visit another time,” Arabella said, offering him a soft smile before turning to leave.
“Fine, go ahead,” Edward replied, not wanting her to endure more of Freya’s hostility.
“You just got here and you’re already leaving? If you weren’t here for money, why run off so
fast?
“I think you came because you’re broke and needed to mooch off Edward,” Freya pressed, her eyes fixed accusingly on Arabella.

“Mom, I told you Arabella isn’t here for money. Why do you keep making up lies about her?” Edward argued, his voice strained.
Freya ignored him completely.
Ethan had initially intended to stay out of it, but hearing this woman repeatedly insult his sister was too much.
“You’re being absurd, you busybody! What gives you the right to speak to my sister that way?” A cool, steady voice cut through the room.
Harper only then noticed the well–dressed man sitting quietly in the corner. She turned toward the voice, surprised.
“Who are you? When did you get in here? And how dare you speak so rudely!” Harper exclaimed, affronted.
This man had no manners–how could he address her mother that way?
Freya finally registered Ethan’s presence. When had this stranger arrived?
She studied him carefully. His suit didn’t look off–the–rack–it had the quiet precision of bespoke tailoring.
