The words were delivered with such intensity that she couldn’t look away. His silver eyes held hers, and she searched his face desperately for any sign that he was lying. She looked for the sign that would suggest this was manipulation, some cruel game designed to hurt her further. But all she found was truth. Burning, intense, undeniable truth.
And it terrified her.
"But i am a traitor’s daughters," she whispered, the old expression falling from her lips like a curse. She looked down at her own hands, as if the answers were written there. When she looked back at Nicholas, her voice was hollow. "My father was accused of murder. You accused my father of killing your father." There were tears in her eyes now, hot and bitter. "So how do you expect me to believe you now when you are telling me that I am your mate?"
Her voice broke completely. "How?"
"Is this another form of punishment?" she continued, the words tumbling out now. "Didn’t I pay the blood debt during those sixteen days? Is this another strategy you are using to make me pay the debt all over again?"
The accusation hung heavy in the air between them. The suggestion that this was manipulation, that this was cruelty disguised as mating, that she was being set up for another form of devastation.
Lucian’s response was sharp, cutting through the silence. He stood from the sofa in one fluid motion, his entire body language screaming sincerity, screaming possession. "No, Lilith, this is not a plan. This is not a joke." His voice was a low growl, raw and desperate. "We are being sincere right now. You are our mate."
She shook her head, the tears falling faster now. "And how are you going to accept the fact that people have already labeled me as the traitor’s daughter? The one who murdered your own father?" Her voice was quiet but fierce. "Tell me how that makes sense. Tell me why your pack members wouldn’t stone me to death if they find out that I am your mate."
The fear was real. The danger was real. The impossibility of the situation was suffocating.
Lucian moved toward her, his gold eyes blazing with raw alpha dominance. "Nobody will touch you," he said, his voice a low growl that seemed to vibrate through her bones. "Nobody dares. They would face their death." His eyes were completely gold now. "I would kill anybody who touches you. I would burn down every pack in this realm to keep you safe."
She looked down at her hands again. Her voice became very small, very broken. "But I am wolfless." The words came out as a whisper. "I am wolfless. My father was a traitor. I have no wolf. I have nothing to offer any of you."
Sebastian moved closer to her. He took her hands into his own gently, carefully, as if she might shatter. His touch was warm, grounding, real in a way that made her want to cry harder.
"We do not care about your father," he said, his voice gentle but firm. "And about your wolflessness, Lilith...." He paused, making sure she was listening, making sure she understood the weight of what he was about to say. "That is something we can accept, because you are our mate."
He looked at his brothers. They nodded, confirming what he was about to say.
