Chapter 148: The Arrival Of The Supreme Council Of Elders

The carriages rolled to a stop before the main hall. The honor guard dismounted first, forming two neat lines flanking the carriage doors. A long moment of silence stretched over the gathered crowd, the kind of silence reserved for moments when everyone understood the weight of what was about to happen.

Then the doors opened.

The first to emerge was High Elder Aldric, and the entire crowd seemed to inhale as one. He was ancient in the way that only the oldest and most powerful werewolves became ancient, his hair silver-white, his frame lean but unmistakably strong beneath his ceremonial robes, his eyes carrying the weight of centuries. He moved with unhurried authority, each step measured, each glance around the compound assessing and judging.

Behind him came the rest of the Council, five other Elders, each one commanding respect in their own right, each one representing a different region of the werewolf realm. They emerged one by one, their robes marking their rank, their expressions varying between polite neutrality and open scrutiny of their surroundings.

Garrett stepped forward the moment the Elders had fully emerged, bowing low, the deep, formal bow reserved only for the highest authority in their world. "High Elder Aldric. Honored members of the Council. Welcome to Shadowmere."

Aldric’s gaze swept over Garrett, then over the assembled pack, then finally settled on the three brothers standing a short distance away. Something flickered across his weathered face....recognition, perhaps, or calculation. "Alpha Garrett," he said, his voice carrying easily across the courtyard despite its quiet register. "Your hospitality already speaks well of your pack. We received Alpha Nicholas’s correspondence some weeks ago suggesting Shadowmere as this year’s host." His eyes moved deliberately to Nicholas. "I trust his instincts were sound."

Nicholas stepped forward, inclining his head with practiced grace. "High Elder. It is an honor to have the Council grace these grounds." His voice was smooth, controlled, betraying nothing of the calculation Lilith now knew lived beneath every word he spoke. "Shadowmere has prepared extensively for your arrival. I trust you will find everything to your satisfaction."

"We shall see," Aldric said, though there was no hostility in it, only the natural caution of a man who had outlived several generations of ambitious alphas and had learned not to extend trust freely. His gaze lingered on Nicholas a moment longer before shifting to Sebastian and Lucian in turn, offering each brother a small nod of acknowledgment. The Blackwood name alone carried weight here, Lilith could feel it in the way the crowd seemed to hold its breath, in the way even the other visiting alphas kept a respectful distance.
