Chapter 149: Bring The Traitor’s Daughter Before the Council

It was nearly two hours into the gathering, as the formal speeches wound down and the hall shifted into a more relaxed rhythm of conversation and drink, when High Elder Aldric raised his hand slightly, and the surrounding conversation quieted almost instantly.

"Before we move fully into the evening’s festivities," Aldric said, his voice carrying easily across the now-attentive hall, "there is a matter the Council wishes addressed. A matter of some age, but one that has never been formally resolved."

Garrett’s expression shifted, a flicker of unease that he quickly smoothed away. "Of course, High Elder. What matter do you refer to?"

Aldric’s gaze moved deliberately toward the Blackwood brothers before returning to Garrett. "The death of Alpha Alaric Blackwood some months past. A death that occurred, as I understand it, due to a betrayal within Shadowmere’s own ranks during an alliance meeting." His voice remained calm, almost conversational, but there was steel beneath it. "The man responsible....Victor Thorne, I believe died during the alliance meeting, but I understand his daughter remains within this pack. Serving, I was told that she had served under a blood debt to the very family her father wronged."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees. Lilith, standing near the serving table with an empty tray clutched against her chest, felt every muscle in her body go rigid.

"I would like to see her," Aldric said simply. "The traitor’s daughter. Bring her before the Council."

A ripple of murmurs moved through the gathered nobility. Lilith’s heart slammed against her ribs so hard she thought everyone in the room must be able to hear it. She didn’t move. She couldn’t move. Her feet felt rooted to the floor.

Across the hall, she saw Lucian’s entire body go taut. His shoulders squared, his jaw clenched, and for one terrifying moment his eyes flashed gold beneath the low lighting, a flicker only visible to those close enough and paying attention. His hand curled into a fist at his side.

"Brother."

Nicholas’s voice was quiet, almost lazy in its delivery, but it cut through the tension like a blade. Lucian’s head snapped toward him. Nicholas didn’t look at him directly, his gaze remained fixed politely on the Elders, but the command in that single word was unmistakable.

"Stand down. Now is not the time."

Lilith couldn’t hear the mindlink, but she saw its effect ripple through Lucian’s frame, the way his shoulders dropped fractionally, the way his jaw unclenched by a degree, though his eyes remained hard, fixed, dangerous. He said nothing. He simply stood there, containing something enormous behind a mask that was rapidly fraying at the edges.

Garrett’s composure cracked for just a moment before he forced it back into place. "Of course, High Elder," he said, his voice carefully even. He turned, searching the room, and his eyes found Luke near the side entrance. A small nod passed between them, an instruction requiring no words.

Luke moved quickly, disappearing toward the serving stations. It took him only a moment to find Lilith among the gathered omegas.
