Chapter 150: The Debt Has Been Paid In Full

"The terms were set and agreed upon by both parties," Sebastian said evenly. "We do not consider it our place, nor the Council’s, to extend punishment beyond what has already been determined and fulfilled. Shadowmere paid what was owed. The matter does not require further examination."

Something in Aldric’s expression shifted, not quite suspicion, but curiosity, the sharp attentiveness of a man who had spent centuries learning to read the spaces between words. His gaze moved from Sebastian to Nicholas, then to Lucian, then finally back to Lilith, who stood frozen beneath the weight of every eye in the room.

"You defend her rather thoroughly for a debt so quickly dismissed," Aldric said quietly.

The silence that followed was suffocating. Lilith felt her pulse hammering in her throat, felt the eyes of the entire hall pressing down on her like physical weight. She didn’t dare look up. She didn’t dare breathe too loudly.

Nicholas’s voice, when it finally came, was calm, unhurried, absolute. "The matter is resolved, High Elder," he said. "We would not have declared it settled otherwise. The Blackwood family does not make such declarations lightly, and we do not appreciate having our word questioned before the Council." There was no heat in his tone, no aggression, only the quiet, immovable certainty of a man who expected to be believed simply because he had spoken.

Aldric held his gaze for a long moment. Something passed between them....an old, wordless negotiation of power and respect that Lilith couldn’t fully understand but could feel pressing against her skin like static. Finally, the High Elder inclined his head, a small concession.

"Very well," Aldric said. "If the Blackwood family considers the debt paid, the Council will not press the matter further." His eyes moved once more to Lilith, lingering there with an expression she couldn’t read. "You may go, girl."

But it was Nicholas who spoke next, his voice cutting smoothly across the moment before Lilith could even process the dismissal. "Lilith." His silver eyes found hers across the hall, calm, controlled, giving away nothing to the watching Elders. "Go on. Return to your duties."

She bowed low, murmuring her thanks, and turned as quickly as decorum allowed, retreating toward the side of the hall where the other omegas stood watching with wide, frightened eyes. Emma reached out the moment she was close enough, gripping her hand tightly, though neither of them dared speak.

Across the room, the tension remained thick, unresolved. Aldric’s gaze lingered a moment longer on the space where Lilith had stood before shifting back to the three brothers, something calculating still working behind his ancient eyes. The other Elders exchanged quiet glances among themselves, murmuring too low for anyone beyond their immediate circle to hear.
