Jasper heaved a long sigh, his expression heavy with helplessness.

His words were cut short by a sudden cry of alarm from outside the courtyard.

Everyone turned to see Christopher leaning weakly against the gate, his face drained of all color.

A dull throbbing pain spread across Margaret’s back, yet a quiet sense of satisfaction settled in her chest.

Christopher’s brows knit tight in agony. He pushed Stella’s hand away weakly. “Do not touch me. My arm burns with a tearing, unbearable pain.”

Stella’s eyes widened in confusion, “That cannot be. We cut away all the rotten flesh. The pain should have faded completely.”

Jasper’s voice shook with worry. “Patrick warned us the lingering poison has festered for far too long. He said amputating your entire arm is the only way to save your life. Could his warning be coming true?”

“Silence!” Christopher snapped sharply, overcome with raw fear.

Stella’s tone turned shaky and anxious. “You took strong pain medicine only moments ago. Its effects should still hold. This pain must be more severe than any tonic can ease. What are we to do now?”

Christopher stared at her in disbelief. “Do you have no cure left, Stella?”

Christopher cut him off before he could finish speaking, desperation thick in his voice. “Do not send a messenger. We will go to him ourselves.”
