Spencer closed his eyes softly. “He is indeed lacking in good sense in this matter.”

He paused briefly, then asked, “What is your take on this?”

Spencer continued, “Everyone knows you once held deep feelings for Christopher. Your father once told me the two of you loved each other, and that was why I arranged your betrothal. He paused again. “You saved Theodore’s life, and now you have come to heal me. With all that in mind, I am willing to give you a chance. If you only gave up Christopher against your will, I will stand up for you and set things right.”

The instant he finished speaking, Margaret froze in shock.

Watching her solemn gesture, Spencer shot Theodore a meaningful glance.

Theodore kept his face impassive, yet the faint furrow between his brows betrayed his hidden tension.

Spencer looked thoughtful. “Speak your wish.”

Margaret lifted her head and met Spencer’s gaze with complete sincerity. “I beg Your Majesty to rule on my behalf–please issue a royal decree to formally end my engagement with Crown Prince Christopher.”

Spencer frowned, “You want me to release a royal decree to break this betrothal?”

Margaret answered firmly, “Yes, Your Majesty. Please issue a royal decree and announce to the whole realm that I am the one who ended my engagement with Crown Prince Christopher.”

As soon as the words left her lips, Theodore let out a quiet breath.

Spencer’s tone turned grave and stern. “Do you understand what this means? If I issue such a decree, there will never be any possibility left for you and Christopher.”

Margaret said, “I understand perfectly. I truly want no further ties with Crown Prince Christopher at all. Yet the public refuses to believe it, and even Crown Prince Christopher himself will not accept it. This has brought endless trouble to my life.
